Ladies and Gents,

I have read just about everything I can find to help me determine if my TO-35 is a Special or Delux. The answer eludes me still.

My TO-35 (SGF-I72449) was purchased back in the late 60's by my dad. It had been refurb'ed and came with "SPECIAL" decals on the hood, so all of these years I have assumed....

It has the three guages, Tracto-meter, and ID tag on the dash unit and the PTO lever is Marked with Engine-Neutral-Ground, as I have been told these are charitaristic of the DELUXE model.However, when I broke it down to remove the clutch, it only had one disk, typical of the SPECIAL and doesn't look anything like the dual clutch disk pack for the Deluxe. (I had never known this tractor to have ad dual clutch for a live PTO) The parts manual is no help to me, because the casting number on the transmission housing "182 840 MI" doesn't show up in my parts manual ANYWHERE! Can someone help me? Could it be that this is indeed a Delux tractor with the wrong clutch in it or a Special with the guages and two position PTO lever?

Help and Thanks,

Richie

The serial prefix of SGF is indicative of a single stage clutch. The Deluxe (live PTO) begins SGM.... I forgot to mention that in my post above.

Hi Richie;
I have a '57 TO-35 Deluxe. It has 4 guages (oil, temp, ammeter & tractormeter), padded seat, power steering and a single-stage clutch although the PTO lever indicates Eng, N and Gnd, like yours. I believe the dual-stage clutch setup on my tractor was either converted or it was built as is from the factory. Either way, it confuses me.
You migh try doing a search on TO-35s in this and the MF forums as there has been lots of discussion over the years on this machine.
Good luck and stay safe,
RogeR

If it was supposed to have two plates in it there would be two drive shafts into the gearbox, one inside the other. The PTO lever marked like that, they are all alike. The parts number you have will probably be the casting number before machining.

Right John, and if it had a dual stage clutch and the two shafts, a single stage clutch would not fit. So, in my opinion, if it came from the factory with a dual stage clutch, and now have a single stage clutch, someone have replaced the entire transmission.

But, look to Norway, my MF 35 has the deluxe seat, and the deluxe tractormeter, but the standard single stage clutch. And mine is original, I know that for a fact. But, it was imported to Norway as new, and I assume the company that imported MF to Norway ordered a standard MF 35, but with the extra seat and tractormeter. Or, maybe Massey Ferguson offered that as a special export option.

So, maybe there are some odd tractors around here and there that is no entirely as the book says.

Then, there is one more option, and that is that maybe in 1957 your tractor was a deluxe tractor, but maybe in 1958 it would have had a dual stage clutch too. I see in my TE 20 shop manual that a TED 20, with the kerosene engine, it had 23.9 hp, and the 85 mm standard engine, but everyone says that the first TED 20 had the 80 mm engine that had about 22-23 horsepower
It does not show up in the manual.
