I just recently bought the 12 volt conversion kit for my to-30 from this site. The directions with the kit say nothing about connecting the #1 or #2 terminals on the alternator. They say just to connect the "Bat" the the ampmeter. What do you all think? Will it still work or will the battery drain when it is off?

I bought the 12 alt. kit from this site a while back. Works just fine. The amount of rpm run-up that is required to get it to self-excite is maybe half-throttle, and certainly less than the working rpm you"d bring it up to anyway. The single wire system is a clean, simple answer to 50+ years of antiquated electrics. Wire it just like it says. You don"t need an external regulator. Add an electronic ignition conversion and the thing will be darn-near bullet-proof.

Sounds like you may have a one wire alternator. They will work but you need to get the RPMs up pretty high (around 3000 I think)to get them started. They have a special regulator inside of them that allows some leakage current and it becomes self exciting. You could just go out and buy a new internal regulator and hook it up as a 3 wire. IMHO you are better off with the 3 wire. The single wire ones are more for race cars or maybe boats.

Mike, I have no idea what Alternator you have, a true One Wire or a Three Wire like the GM 10 SI. The big main output post is what wires to the load (NOT to battery) side of the ammeter. Its possible to make a GM 10 SI work kinda like a one wire but you have to excite the Field.

I dont know whether it is a true one wire or not all I know is that it has the post that goes to the ammeter and it also has the #1 and #2 terminals, but in the directions it says nothing about the terminals.. I could really care less as long as its going to work..It says something about having to excite the field if it sits for a long time whick seems like no big deal, its just that lets say i hook everything up, go out and do some work and shut her down....will I hve to re-excite it in the morning?
