I was brushhogging the pasture today when all of the sudden my Fergie backfired and died. I tried to restart it a few times with no luck, so I popped the clips on the distributor cap only to find the rotor self destructed. It appeared to have been epoxied together by the previous owner. I'm new to the Fergie. What would be a correct replacement part? I have read elsewhere that any Delco 4 cylinder cap and rotor will do. This is the two spring clip type cap running with the 12 volt ignition system.

While you're checking for the ol' loose camshaft nut problem, check the radial run out on the distributor shaft and see whether you distributor shaft and/or the distributor bushing are badly worn. You'll need to replace them or your engine wlll run like a three legged dog.

Did the distributor move around at all or jump up and down slightly while running? If so, it will be exactly NicKKK told you. If not, you may be lucky and just replace the cap and rotor. Good luck on it. RonW

Joe, Napa has replacement caps and rotors for the TO-20. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but your rotor "probably" broke because your camshaft nut is either loose or fell off into the oil pan making the camshaft and gear jump around in there causing your distributor to bump up and down. This is what happened to me anyway, and I had to take the timing cover off, get the nut back on, and put it back together. I guess you can get another cap and rotor and just try it as is but IF it does it again, what I"ve described is likely the problem. BE CAREFUL.....if you run the tractor without checking on the camshaft nut, you run the risk of destroying the distributor and having to buy a new one. I speak from experience!

Good Luck
