Hello all. Since I have the tractor split in half already, and going to have the motor rebuilt, is there anything else I should take a look at since I have the tractor apart?

Don"t want a repeat of when we tore the John Deere in two for a clutch problem, and put it back together THEN the rear main seal started leaking. Drat!

Thanks for your time!

Well I guess this is going to get a little more complicated than I thought. I got a call from the guy we're having machine everything for us and he told me the block was cracked in several places and its useless. Anybody know any good tractor junkyards or remanufacturing places in West Central Indiana? Thanks!

I would suggest you post another message about the cracked block, you will get more responses. But I have read on this forum of others with that same problem having them pinned and welded. Good luck.

Well we did manage to find a block and its on its way here. Found it in Missouri. I don't even want to think about the shipping costs. I know these engines came cracked straight from the factory, but from what I've been told, there were a BUNCH of cracks in this block, and our machinist told us that he could weld them back up, but he wouldn't guarntee their strenght. I guess somebody let it get entirely too hot. That's not gonna happen again. Thanks for your input.

You would do well to replace the clutch disk and the transmission seals. Also check the tranmission bearings for wear. Yes, it is a lot of extra work but sure beats having to split the tractor again later!

Well looking at the transmission clutch, it looks to be fairly new and good. I haven't checked the PTO clutch yet. But I will measure both for the amount of material left on the plate. I'll have to check on the transmission seals. Thanks. As for bearings are you talking about where the shafts go from the clutch through the casting into the transmission right?

I am in the (prolonged by lazyness) process of rebuilding my TO-20. when I found water in the bottom end mixed with the oil I tore the engine down and found the webbing between the cylinders cracked. this allowed the water through when I enquired at a local machine shop I was directed to a machine shop in Indy. they bolted the block together from side to side as there is not enough metal there to properly weld. the name of the shop is D&B I believe, on the south side. If your block is cracked in a similar fashion they might be able to help. I understand they also weld broken cast items

Well we ended up buying the block from Missouri. It had cracks in all the same places and they had all been repaired so I guess we'll see how this works. Gotta paint it though. This block is red and ours is green. Don't think that'd look too good, do you? We're getting the rest of the kit installed and all this and that. Can't wait to get that motor back! I miss my tractor!!
