TEA20 Heating/cooling etc.

Ok, our TEA20 doesn't have a temp gauge, so don't know, but would guess from previous threads here it was getting too hot today. Was tedding a small field ((3-4 acres) and it seemed to run ok, but oil pressure kept going down until it got to about 30 lbs. When got done, water pump (I assume it is anyhow as it is right behind the fan) was seeping water and gas tank was hissing at the cap. Seemed to be plenty of water in the radiator and wasn't oil in it or water in the crankcase oil. Are the water pumps a swap out or can you get a kit to rebuild them like the old Triumph sports car water pumps? Would like to put in a temp gauge but the various posts weren't real clear exactly where to mount the sensor. Sounds like a Ford setup is the way to go, but really a novice with these tractors. Any specifics on what to ask for would be appreciated. Also, anything else that should be checked, cleaned, greased, etc. that might help cut down on the problem? Thanks in advance.
Stan

I just bought the temp guage kit for a Ford NAA from the NH dealer; (part #C3NN-18287-A, about $34), and it went in fine except the line is a little short and the next time I take the battery out I'll have to lift it over. The sensor bulb goes in the upper water casting right below the top hose (on the distributor side).

We are in the boonies. Nearest tractor parts place of any kind is @50 miles away and all they had was generic. I'm somewhat impatient. Got car temp gauge from local NAPA. Plenty of line (too much actually, coiled extra up by battery box) and the threads were 3/8 national pipe thread which with lots of teflon tape threaded into the plug hole. Seems to work fine. Water pump still leaks, but maybe that will heal itself with time now that it isn't overheating.

You need to make sure that the matrix of the radiator is clear so you can see through it. It has most likely built up with grass seeds etc. and is more or less blocked by now. get a torch and put it behind the radiator so you can look through it and you should be able to see where it is blocked. Get a hosepipe with not too much pressure or you may damage the radiator and wash the radiator out from the engine side to the front, make sure that you go in all the corners and along the top and bottom. Having the radiator cap hissing like that could indicate that the cap is losing pressure and needs replacing, that will make it overheat. It needs a cap of 4lbs psi. Doubt it is the water pump, but get hold of the fan and try to move it back and forward, if there is any wear at all then change it, you can get kits from this site. try cleaning the radiator out first as that may put off having to do the pump for a while. The temperature gauge screws into the thermostat housing at the front of the fuel tank on the left side near to the thin by-pass hose, you remove the blank and screw in the capillary tube, these gauges for the Ferguson are available from here too, no need to get Ford stuff. Oil pressure on a reasonably good engine should be between 40 and 60 lbs psi. Check the engine oil and change it if necessary for good quality oil. If there is a grease nipple on the water pump then grease it gently till grease comes out. Make sure that the breather hole in the gas tank cap is clear. Clean the radiator quite often, if you leave it and it keeps doing this you will blow a head gasket at the very least, keep it washed out. Prevent this happening rather than cure it.

After reading John's fine thread on this topic, I decided to clean and inspect the radiator on my TEA. Seems to be in pretty good shape and I hosed out the grass, twigs etc. I then checked the radiator cap and noticed some wear to the gasket. Went to NAPA and to my surprise they had a TEA 20 radiator cap listed @ 4psi. It should be in on Wednesday. Just want to thank John and this site for the motivation to do some preventative maintinance, these are great tractors that will keep running if given some TLC. Paul F B

Just to be sure... took the radiator to thermostat housing hose off and then the thermostate housing itself. No thermostat. Going to clean everything up and put new thermostat in the housing and then screw sensor for heat gauge into the bolt hole beside the small radiator hose coming out of the lower section of the thermostat housing. Then I'll refill it with antifreeze and see what happens. (at least then I will be able to tell how much it's overheating if she is. Anything I'm forgetting? (I'll do the oil filter thing after I get the cooling straightened out.)

Minor glitch. The thermostat they gave me at the parts store was a 180 degree model so will have to return tommorrow for a 160 degree one. Also, the temperature gauge setup they had won't screw into the block. Guess I will have to order the correct one from here or somewhere similar. John, does the TEA20 take a special thermostat. My TR7 has a bypass hose and if you put a regualar thermostat in it (as it had when I got it) it blows the head gasket. Any similar concerns for the TEA20. Also, as I ran into the roadblocks on the cooling front, decided to change the oil filter out and see about doing the adjustment. It had a short filter in it (about 1 1/2" shorter than the one I got which seemed to be the correct one.) Would the short filter have had any effect on the oil pressure readings or cause and serious problems to the engine?

The thermostat should be fully open at 171 deg F and should start to open at 133 deg.F - 147 deg.F. The temperature gauge screws into the thermostat housing alongside the top connection of the thin by-pass hose. The thermostat is not a special one and this engine is not prone to blowing head gaskets providing it was torqued down properly and the head isn't warped at all. The short filter would not have any effect on the oil pressure but it would not be able to filter the oil as the oil would not be flowing through, it would be flowing around the outside of it. Make sure that the blanking plate and spring is on the bottom end of this filter when you fit the new element or the same thing will be happening. When you fit the canister with the filter in it to the engine, you will have to press against the spring to fit it so you know it will be making a good seal

FYI- I am sure John means an english torch i.e. Flashlight... not a propane torch i.e. flame :-) seperated by a common language....

Also, The hissing from the gas tank can mean that your fuel was boiling or getting ready to boil. This can happen. I had it happen once, but not since I used an air gun to blow all chafe' out of the radiator fins as John suggests.

I bet a clogged up radiator is your main problem...

You are correct I did mean a flashlight, it gets difficult sometimes with all these different words we use for the same things. I am thinking of compiling a list of these words so I wont do this again....when I get time of course.

Dang! Seems like I never get to play with the oxy/acet anymore either. I was looking forward to it.
My most grevious misinterpritation of "English" (can't believe I'm really telling this on myself) was sloshing canning wax around in gasoline before washing the oil screen on my Bonneville because the manual said to wash it in "parrafin". On the plus side, adjustable spanner only caused minnor confusion. Stan

Wow! Thanks again for your expertise. Will do/try all the above. I shot some grease into the nipple on the water pump (when I found it had one today). I put in 8 pumps and quit because I didn't know how much might be too much. Didn't see any come out anywhere. Where should I see it come out when it has had enough.
The oil pressure starts out at about 100 on the gauge (new 30 wt. oil in it) and gradually goes down. If the engine was getting too hot, it would probably thin the oil excessively and make the pressure go down. My guess for what happened today anyhow. It usually settles in about 45 or so on the guage. Again, really appreciate the help. Am sure I will have more questions. Especially since the HayDR has shown me a mower that will handle my hay and run effectively off the fergy. Thanks again.

The grease will come out of a small hole underneath in a very thin trickle, not all water pumps have this greaser fitted so maybe you are lucky. The oil pressure is too high, it does need reducing or it could possibly blow the rear main oil seal on the crankshaft. If you look at the oil filter on the side of the engine you will see a large screw with a screwdriver slot in the end, slacken off the locknut that holds this and unscrew this large screw a couple of turns and see if the pressure drops, if it does set it so that it works between 40 and 60 lbs psi.when hot. If it doesn't adjust then possibly the oil filter itself will need changing, beware of the plate that covers the end of the filter does not come off the long bolt when you remove the old filter, there is also a circlip that holds this plate that you may drag off the long bolt if you are not careful. I don't know what temperature zone you are in but 30 weight could be a little too thin under some circumstances, I know you have high oil pressure now but when it is adjusted things may be different. But if the pressure is usually 45 as you say this is fine as long as it is the same after you have adjusted the oil pressure relief valve. You can mail me direct at:- fergusontractors at tiscali dot co dot uk with your other questions if you wish. John

Really appreciate it John. A few more shots of the grease gun got the grease coming out where you indicated. Will check on the oil pressure adjustment. There is some kind of adjusting screw I found last night when washing the radiator (not a huge amount of stuff in the fins) and decided to hose off the rest of the grease/dirt crust in front. Thought it might be for the governor, but don't know.. (mainly was looking for any more hidden grease fittings). Am going to see what I can chase down locally for the temp unit and thermostat before going the shipping route. (not optomistic actually as the antique tractor shop here didn't think he had anything to fit because "it was metric". May be showing my ignorance, but I'm pretty sure your manufacturers were drug kicking and screaming into the metric system in the 70's or 80's. My Triumph Bonneville is all standard and it's a '78, so guessing the '53 fergy would be too). Thanks again.

You are quite correct, it is NOT metric it is BSP, these guys behind these parts counters really annoy me at times, they don't look things up yet come out with some statements like that...its just a way of getting rid of you really. That screw that you found and you thought could be part of the governor, was it hiding under the bottom hose, if it was it is the bumper adjustment for the governor as you thought, this controls the top end speed as well as damping any surging. Anything that restricts the air flow should be washed off, there is not a lot of water in any of these modern systems (did I say modern?) so the air needs to flow easily to keep it cool, so just make sure that the whole radiator is clear and clean.

John, you are good. After the various remedies suggested, the tractor held a steady 170(gauge goes from 160 to 190 and was just slightly on high side of the 160 mark). Oil pressure stayed around 40-45 once it got to work with the tedder. Still started up at 100 and ran there for a couple minutes before going to 80 and then gradually working down to 40. A big improvement though. No boiling gas, no overheating, no oil pressure dropping down to 30.... now I'll work on getting her to run smoother (runs like a car with a hot cam presently). Thanks again.

Glad we were able to get it right for you Stan, The oil pressure starting off at 100lbs psi then dropping could be caused by a sticking relief valve in the filter assy. When you have nothing to do?? you could take it out and clean it and rebuild it. The whole assy. comes out as a lump, just unscrew it out of the filter canister (leave that on the tractor)just strip it and wash the components. There is very little in there only a spring and a ball, but it can build up with carbon etc. from the oil and stick. If you need anymore information on the carb. settings or maybe the governor settings, email me. fergusontractors at tiscali dot co dot uk
It sounds like your engine is in very good order from what you tell me and well worth keeping it that way.
