My brakes were a bit weak to begin with but now I have no brakes if I go forward. However, if I back up, it feels like the brakes are on even though I am not pushing down on the brake pedal. What gives?

Usually you get that impression that the brakes are on if the springs on the shoes have been fitted incorrectly, the shoes should power them selves on (self-energise) when you press the brake pedal but if the springs are fitted incorrectly it may only do it in revers or not at all. Sure seals are good and you should have no problems with them and they will do the job for you.

Are the brake drums greasy around the edges? It sounds like the axle seals are leaking and the shoes are grease soaked, have a dirt buildup, and can't operate properly. The only way to know is to remove them for inspection. If the rear tires are fluid filled, be very careful, each can weigh about 400+lbs.

Thanks Ray. I took off the wheels today and the left one was saturated with grease and oil. The right one was a bit better. I cleaned them with brake cleaner and torched them dry. I now have great brakes but will obviously have to replace seals soon. I have a friend who said he would help me put on "sure seals". Have you heard of them? Also, where do you live in Indiana? I am in Osceola, near South Bend.
