I thought this would be an easy job for someone with little experience.... I have the manuals, I"ve read them (again now 3x) and something isn"t right. When I try to remove the oil filter pan nut, the whole thing turns (that"s probably ok). But the whole asembly drops about one inch and then won"t come out any further (and I can"t seem to get it back together agin either). If I try to turn the nut while holding the plate still, it just turns in place. I did a search on this site and found another posting (http://www.ytmag.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=ferg&th=27405) but no resolution. Thanks for any suggestions.

Many times I have had a similar problem with the culprit on the other side not wanting to come off, just spin. I have found that a lot of times an air impact wrench will overcome it and save the day. You might try tightening it before loosening...just my observations. Fred OH

Sounds like the pipe that the oil pan retaining nut screws onto is unscrewing from the main bearing. You say the pan will drop an inch - you need to get some vise-grips or water pump pliers between the pan and the sump to grip that pipe so you can unscrew the nut from it.

Eric,
The nut you refer to should be a bolt. The bolt threads into a "pipe" thst is threaded on the inside. The archive that you found suggest that you wedge the oil filter cover down, while unscrewing the bolt. I agree with that. The threads might be messed up on the bolt/pipe. After the plate is off you can just pull the old filter out, and if the oil pan is not bent, the screen will come out as well. The can that you will see above the screen *should* be spring loaded, so it is kind of hard the get the whole works started back in place.

Make sure you replace the washer on the bolt. I just changed my filter, and of course it leaked so I had to dump the oil twice.

Tried that method - it doesn't work. I pulled down with a piece of wood and turned over thirty times - more than once. I pulkled hard enought o worry about bending the metal platte. Any other ideas?

Can you push the bottom plate back up so that the bolt is exposed? If so I think you will have to cut the bolt off there. Once the cover is off you will be able to see if the bolt is stuck in the pipe, or the pipe is turning, or likely both. You might have to pull the oil pan to fix the problem.

No, the bolt will turn, but it is still tight to the cover plate. I can hold the plate steady, but the nut just spins tightly in place. Pulling the entire oil pan would help if I could get it past the plate, but wouldn't it just give me an inch of space above, meaning it will only drop as far as the cover plate will drop not enough room do do anything, I would think. How long is the cover plate bolt? If the pipe it screws into meets the plate on the other side, I might be able to get a vice grips on it. I really don't know whats on the otehr side of the plate - first time filter change.

Eric,
If I understand correctly the cover is hanging an inch below the oil pan now?

What I believe has happened is that the pipe has unscrewed at the top. The pipe has a flange at the top that has a spring below it. The spring forced a tin can (the oil filter cover) down. Because the oil filter cover will not fit through the opening in the oil pan you cannot get the plate down. I believe that if you take the oil pan bolts off, you *should* get the pan, and the whole oil filter assembly (pipe, cover, screen, etc.) with it.

Of course you could drop the whole oil pan, but why make extra work? I'd try to get some grips on the pipe (illustration no 53) between oil pan (illustration no 36), oil filter cover (no 38). As I said in my previous post, it's clear that the oil pipe has come unscrewed from the centre main bearing cap instead of the nut coming off the pipe.
