Dead Cylinder

Will a stuck valve give you power loss at that cylinder, showing an oily, full of crud plug? I know the cylinder was dead because when I removed the plug wire, it made no difference RPM or power wise.
And here"s the strange part, after cutting grass with 3 cylinders for a while, boom..... .the cylinder came alive again. Back to full power. If this was the case, is there anything I can do to help prevent a valve from sticking? I currently use 10W-40 oil in my TO20 tractor. Thanks

An intake valve stuck open will cause backfiring through the carb. An exhaust valve stuck open will cause smoky exhaust, and your posted symptoms. Harry Ferguson contenental engines require straight weight oils to avoid premature wear. I suggest adding a high quality oil additive to remove sludge in case the sticking is cause by that, and using gas additives to remove combustion deposits in the cylinder. It may be there is carbon built-up on a valve face and holding the valve open, and it broke off causing the return to power. Non-use and very light use may cause carbon build-up because these engines are designed to run rich with no or little load. This rich fuel mixture aids engine cooling under heavy loads, by design.
