FE35 - Core plug

While "topping" grass at speed on my FE35, a cloud of steam appeared from behind the starter motor (doh - slower next time).

A core plug (freeze plug?) had burst. However what I found was a lot of filler (chemical metal or something) and a loosely fitting concave metal disc (once I"d hacked all the filler out).

This looks like a bodge job....anyone help me on what this is supposed to be like? How easy is the proper item to refit?

Thanks

Mike

These core plugs rust through after quite a long time, especially if there has been no anti-freeze in the engine. What has most likely happened is that the core plug has rusted through and someone has done a "bodged" repair and tried to seal it with some filler of some kind. Its easy to fit a new one once you have it all cleaned out, you simply sit the new plug in place and hit the centre to expand it to lock it in position. It is advisable to use some sealer of some kind (like gasket cement)on the new one though as the seat may be rusted and could possibly leak slightly.
