I was giving rides on my TO-20 last weekend and the new battery lost it's charge. I checked the archives here and did all the things in the generator area and all the numbers seem to check out. I polarized it and got 19 volts and 20 amps after grounding the generator. 7.1 volts across the battery while running and it still ran after after disconnecting the battery. It would seem the voltage reg is working. Can a voltage reg work and still not charge the battery. Any help outhere?

Jim, see my marathon reply above, something in there might help you.

19 volts @ 20 amps off your generator sounds weird to me, we are talking about a good'ol fashioned stock Delco-Remy 6 volt generator? Not an alternator?

Do you have an ammeter in your dash? A good V.R., and charged battery should give you ~7 volts @ 2-3 amps. A dead battery will pull more amps.

These old 6V charging systems don't do a good job charging at low RPMs, if you were putting around at idle all afternoon you might not get a good charge.

Might also want to check that you don't have a current drain while the ignition is OFF that might be draining your battery.

The 19 volts was not across the battery but was read of the cables with the negative diconnected from the battery while the F terminal was grounded. Across the battery it read 7.1 when the cables were connected.

I pulled this from the archives, it"s very similar to my readings.

Hello again guys,
Just want to let you know how I made out after my "no charge post".
I did check the A terminal on the generator to make sure it was polarized. All ok there.
Next, connected the F terminal to ground and then saw 30 amps on the amp meter and 7.2 volts across the battery. Decreasing to 6.9 v after a few minutes. Good generator. After disconecting the F terminal the amps went to zero and volts across batt to 6.2 volts.
Next, i called my auto electric shop where I got the VR, and he told me how to adjust the voltage. Worked great, and got the voltage acrossed the batt up to 6.8 volts. I would still like to see 7 to 7.2. At this setting I am now seeing about 20 amps on the amp meter. At working rpm. Does this sound good to you?. Any comments appreaciated. And thanks for all the help.

Ron L.

Could also be a bad a battery. Have it checked at an auto parts store. Just because it's new doesn't mean it can't be bad.
