Last week I was discing and working my TEA 20 pretty hard. The tractor stalled and I could here a hissing noise from the vent on the gas cap....I opened the cap to find the fuel bubbling/boiling. I put my hand on the fuel tank (above the manifold) and coudn"t touch it. Any suggestions...has anyone ever installed a heat sheild under the tank?
Now the tractor leaks fuel out of the air intake on the carburator...Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Alex

This is one to be careful of, a lot of hard working Fergies have this problem. We had a neighbour get badly burnt, when the fuel boiled over and set both him and the tractor on fire. Keep an eye on the rad, keep it clean and watch that fuel mixture. Our old gal is 53 this year, still raking hay and doing bushwork but we leave the real heavy work to the newer diesels, all Masseys of course!

Alex,

When I first got my TE-20 I had the same thing happen to me. I parked the tractor and the fuel was in a full rolling boil. I when I opened the cap some came out and rolled off the tank and onto the manifold and instantly vaporized. Good thing I don't smoke and there was a light wind that day. (No Fire, but I was very nervous for a time)

What I found... I was low on fuel so the smaller amount was more prone to boil (though even a small amount should not boil.

2) The Radiator passages were plugged with years of chaff and grass debris from cutting. Fix: I blew all the debris out using a compressed air tank and blow nozzle. The passages are clear and I have not had a repeat of the problem.

A quick check of the gas/air mixture to see if it is running too hot is to run the tractor at night and see how bright the manifold glows. A dull red is normal getting more cherry red may indicate a need to modify your fuel mixture.

Jeff

I have heard of this problem, more on N's, than on Fergies though. I have heard of guys installing sheet metal between the tank and engine to act as a heat shield.
I'm a bit of a purist I guess, boiling gas isn't typically a problem on a hard working tractor, and heat shields weren't part of the original design, installing a heat shield is more than likely compensating for another problem. My guess is you have an engine overheating problem...which is probably why your engine stalled.

Might want to check your engine timing, your carb mixture, clean your radiator fins and flush your radiator, maybe check your thermostat. Those are the usual culprits causing overheating.
