Broken gear shift lever..................

Anyone ever broke off a shift lever. After my worn TO-35 sat for a few months getting the cam walk and a few other things repaired,we used it for a few hours today. On a shift from rev back to first the lever broke clear off. Looks like it had been welded there before. Its about an inch and a half above the ball. What would ever cause this to break the first time? Is the lever cast or steel? Any ideas short of teardown and install new one would be much appreciated. Thanks, RonW

It would be rough handling that caused it to break, maybe there was drag on the clutch and the operator was dragging the gears in rather than adjust the clutch, this also does wonders for the teeth on the gears in the box. I am pretty certain that you can remove the lever without stripping the top off, its just a long time since I did one of those. Look under the rubber boot at the bottom and I think there is a large nut.

The lower part did come out. It has a pin rather than a nut. I"m just glad I dont have to pull the top off. We took it to a pro welder today and he put it back together. Dont know how long it will last. It seemed to already have welded twice before. The trans does shift nicely, so maybe it was an old problem. Thanks for your reply. RonW
