Compression Too Good

Had a blonde moment, or maybe my Alzheimer"s is kicking in, but remembering that I forgot to service my TO30 air cleaner when I changed oil last week, I cleaned it and filled it with the only oil I had on hand - 5W-30 instead of straight 30 like in the crank case. Long story - short, after about 30 minutes of bush hogging in 90+ degree weather, it would barely run. Did a full tune-up today and improved it somewhat. Found I had aspirated about a cup of oil from the air cleaner. Carbon in the cylinders has increased compression from normal 115-125 to 140-160 in an otherwise tight sound engine. Can I get some good premium gas and burn the carbon out, or is there some other tune-up in a can I can use? I really don"t want to open up the engine in this heat if there is another way. Need suggestions and experience.

In my 22 years of auto and tractor repair I have found a better way of removing carbon. With the engine running just run some ATE through the carb!Yes it will smoke VERY white but you will be amazed by the results!!

Is that "ATE" or "ATF?"

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it for ten seconds. What about engines that burn that much oil anyway? A cupful of oil over half an hour would be no worse than twostroke mixture. What makes you think it's full of carbon? Just carry on using it.

I'm sure there will be some who will disagree with me. Several times over the years I have cleaned the carbon out of engines this way with on harm to the engine. With the engine at operating temp., remove the air inlet hose to the carb. and with the engine at fast idle, slowly squirt some water into the carb. using a spray bottle. The water breaks the carbon loose and sends it out the tail pipe. Be sure to let the engine run a little while to dry all of the moisture out of the cylinders.

Told you my mind was slipping. Thanks for the reminder. Put about a pint of water through it and it is purring like a kitten.

Tex, you could try filling the cylinders up with Marvel Mystery oil, kerosene, diesel, Rislone or something like that. Let it soak for a day or 2, then siphon it out. Run the engine with a good cleaner additive in the gas, and give it a real good workout. You might need high octane gas for knocking. And change that air filter oil to 30wt.
You might need to change the oil, the MMO could run past the rings into the crankcase.
