TEa20 questions for newbie

Hi All,

1) How can I tell if my Fergie is a TE-20 or a TEa-20? I know from searching these forums the "a" designates a "standard" engine made in England as opposed to a Continental engine (is that right?) but how do I tell from looking at it which it is? It"s a petrol engine grey model if that helps. I"m Down Under.

2) Can I run it (either the TE-20 or the TEa-20) on normal unleaded petrol?

I have been using "LRP" which is Lead Replacement Petrol which in Oz has a RON (octane) rating of 96. Unleaded in Oz varies from 91 to 93. I am scared to try it for fear of damage.

Does anyone know whether the compression and valve seats of the TE20/TEa20 are OK for 91 RON?

If not, can anyone recommend a fuel additive for Unleaded that will be OK for Fergie? (They are phasing out LRP now.)

3) When searching these forums I don"t seem to be able to find info I am sure must exist here - for example the questions I asked. I have tried using [TEA-20 + petrol] & [TEA-20 + gas] & [TEA-20 + fuel] as well as TEA20 & TEA 20 & TEa20 instead of TEA-20 in the above search combinations without success. I also tried without the "+" but it seemed to want phrases then. Is there a FAQ sticky that exlains the search mechanism? (I couldn"t find that either). I just don"t want to waste your valuable time repeating answers to questions asked already.

By the way, a while ago you guys gave me some good advice for replacing wheel studs - many thanks - my Fergie is operational again, much safer this time using 8 studs instead of 3! Mongrel of a job without the right tools eg stud remover. Thanks in advance for your help again.

If the plate behind the steering wheel is still there, it will say on that what it is, if the plate is missing, just look at the left side of the engine, if the oil filler is at the drivers end of the engine it is a TEA Standard engine and if it is at the front it is a TE with a Continental engine. The engine will run on the lowest Octane rating you can get it is ok. There is no need to add 2-stroke oil to the fuel on a TEA engine as there is a sump breather that lubricates the valves. It will be fine on your cheap fuel as it was designed to run on a lot lower than that, so you don't need to use a fuel additive either. Don't worry about asking question that is why we are here, to give you answers. It is very simple to remove any of the wheels studs, no special tools required, just hit it with a hammer, if you do it right, only one smack at it will be required and you wont break anything. Did you replace all the studs on that wheel or just the ones that were missing, if you didn't replace them all then I would think that you should consider doing that as usually the reason for them breaking is that the wheel has been run slack and they have worn slightly and at this point they break off.

Hi Dave ... I'm Newcastle way and run a TEA20 (s#49919)with either LRP (if I can get it) or unleaded with a lead additive in it (20ml/20litres). have had no probs as yet.

Hi Dave,

The TE20 was built until until serial number 48000. During this time you could be supplied with either engine. After serial number 48000 all engines were made by the Standard motor company.

There are very few TE20's in Australia so it is very unlikely that you have one.

As Jim said, the copression ratio is so low that the rating is not an issue with unleaded. Valve seats may or may not be a problem. I use a small amount of 2 stroke mixture in the fuel to lubricate the valves. I put about 50ml into 20 litres. So far i have had no problems in any of the vehicles that I do this.

Cheers

Phillip

Hi Dave,
The Standard Motor Company engine has its ignition coil mounted vertically beside the distributor; the Continental engine's coil is horizontal, above the starter motor.
If you want, you could take the head off, and put in harder valve seats to deal with the unleaded fuel. Or, you could wait until the valve seats recede, and then put in the harder seats. I favour the "don't worry about it" approach - it may never happen. Personally I think the fear over unleaded is overblown. Here in Canada, and I think the US as well, we have not had leaded fuel for maybe 15 years, and nobody seems to have been affected at all, at least that I have heard. We had the initial fear but now everyone has forgotten about it.
As far as octane, the Standard engine (I am not familiar with the Continental) is only about 6:1 compression anyway so it's a long way from needing fancy fuel. Really I think if you put in whatever petrol you can get your hands on, the tractor will run fine. They aren't high tech.
