Hey guys,

I am in the planning stages of a restore of my mom's TO20 and have a couple of questions that I couldn't find answers to in the archives mostly pertaining to the cooling system.

I can't find new coolant hoses in YT parts list for the TO20, what are you guys using? The tractor has an external block heater that currently taps into the engine supply line.

Also the radiator cap is worn out. I couldn't find one of these on YT either. Is there anything special I should look for from the local napa? I am worried about the relief pressure setting of the cap.

Finally, I would like to add a temperature sensor to make sure I never over heat her. Where are you guys attaching the sender at?

Thanks in advance. This is a great site!

...danny

My fairly early TO20 has a cap from Carquest part# 33004. I think the radiator is original but has been recored.

My hoses probably don't look like original equipment, but they have been working fine for ~6 years now. I think they are both 1 1/2 ID hose. The upper hose is just straight hose, the lower hose is one of those universal accordion-looking hoses that is easy to bend. Both hoses are cheap at just about any auto parts store.

Radiator cap - not sure on that, I'm thinking it should be rated for 3 - 5 PSI.

temp. sensor- I installed one a few years back. The sensor threads right into a port on the side of your coolant manifold coming out the top of your engine, you should see the square or hex head plug there now. Clean the flat seat at the bottom of that port real good before installing the sensor bulb, the actually sealing surface is the flat seat, not the threads themselves. Wouldn't hurt to use a dab of silicon gasket maker when you install. Measure the length of capillary tubing you need, you can get the exact length you need. If you get one of those "universal" sensors, the capilary tubing will be way to long, you will have to do something with it to keep it out of the way. I installed a sensor that said it was for a Ford NAA or 600 series, it fit perfect in my TO-20.

Watch the thermostat, it should be in the upper radiator hose. You can push it in either way, but only one way is the right way. It should have a little direction of flow arrow on it, which should point towards the radiator. Install it backwards and your tractor will overheat in just a few minutes.

Took the old hoses off of my TO20 into my local CarQuest store. Layed them on the counter and said, "I need new ones". He said, "Just a minute", walked off with my hoses and in about three minutes he returned with a new fancy curved bottom hose that was a perfect match and a 6 inch piece of straight hose that he had cut from stock. Six inches is as short as they sell. Can't find the receipt for the part #s or price but I'll bet the good guys can help you real reasonablely. Try it you'll like it. LOL

I think the radiator cap for a TO20 is 7lbs.

Jim: My Ferguson Shop Manual says it should maintain 4 psi. I don't know if 7 psi is ok or not. I got my 4 pounder at CarQuest. Again, took in the old one and told him what pressure and got the new one. And believe me, I DON'T WORK FOR CARQUEST. I just like their knowledge of their parts, their service and the price ain't bad either. But, always take in the old part when possible and let them do the work for you. I like to deligate where possible (Wife says I'm just lazy).
