I have an old Diesel MF135 which has been running fine. Saturday I started it and after about 5 seconds there was a pop and it died. Engine turns over fine but won't start. The pop was from the right side of the engine and I think it might be the fuel pump. Any ideas?

Whaddya mean, "old MF 135" - they"re wonderful tractors (after the rear tyres have been ballasted, the brake linkage modified so they stop and the fuel pump upped by 10% to give it some "go")
Anyway, I have to say your problem"s got me stumped. The inj pump"s on LHS and in 40 yrs I"ve never heard one "pop" - nor a lift pump come to that. Suppose there"s always a first. Can think of lots of things that could go "pop", but none would stop the engine. I"d slacken an injector pipe on the pump & spin engine to see if it squirts fuel.
Suppose there"s an outside chance inj pump has broken shaft - seen that a couple of times on Perkins DPA pumps.
Check to see if diesel squirts from inj pipe. If not, remove & check lift pump. Are your fuel filters clean? I"ve known these engines suck air back through bleed-off when filters were dirty.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I think I have caused my problem. I checked the fuel tank and it is bone dry so I may have just run out of fuel. I didn't check before starting, but thought I still had enough. It looks like there may have been a fuel leak under the filter (on the ground) which I did not see due to weeds. The fuel filter is way over due to be changed. Ran out of several years ago and had a lot of trouble bleeding the lines and now not sure how I did it.
