Please tell me how I can tell the difference between an 8N and a Fergie when they are painted the same color? I am looking at one that the owner says it its an 8N and I believe it to be a Fergie. What do I look for? Please advise.

Front grills on Fords have vertical bars. Fergusons have horizontal bars. You can spot this difference driving past them on the road.

Also check under the steering wheel, Fergusons have the name and serial number there.

8N's say "FORD" on them, Fergies don't.
Sorry, couldn't resist. The spark plug thing is a good observation. Fergie TO-20's & 30's have a flip up hood... the whole hood, which I think is the greatest thing. N's don't. 8N's have a little lever under under the seat on the right side for the position control, Fergies don't, neither do 9N's. Fergies have the engine model# cast on the lower left side of the block, Z120 or Z129. They are raised letters and usually show thru years of crud. 8N's are 4speed, 9N's 3 speed, Fergies all 4 speed.
I see 9N's and Fergies get mixed-up all the time. First thing I look for is the flip-up hood and the engine, then I know what I'm really looking at.

fords have flat heads.spark pluds should be on top of the motor pointing striat down. fergies have over head valves, spark plugs go in at an angle in the side of the head.
