Afternoon Everyone
I have been posting in here for quite some time and every once in a while the thought pops into my head on the ages of the people that I have been talking to or reading their responses. So Im going to ask, What are the ages of the folks in here? Im sure everyone else has wondered from time to time as well. I will start Im 48 years old, married 26 years with 3 kids, 1 boy & 2 girls. I work for the Canadian Government as a Food Inspector, specializing in Dairy. ( I was a Licenced Cheesemaker for 17 years before joining the government ) Any body else? If I have offended then I do apoligize,,There are folks that want to stay private, and that I do understand, regards----- Barry

I'm 38, lived in god's country for the First 26, Finished college an though that The City life was for me. Moved to the big city.(It was the real bad part of town.) Moved to the better part of town found my wife or she found me. Both didn't like city life so we move to a small acrage. Thats still not enough space. So we upgraded to 16 acres with the hope of getting the full 120 someday. Three great boys. It's right. "You can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country of the boy." I would say go ahead and travel the same road I learned a lot. But ..... ..... ...

My first visit to this board. I"m 46, married 28 years, father of four, elder in my church and a US Navy logistician living in S. Indiana.

Found this site while researching help for dead spots in the power steering on a 165 MF. My dad bought this tractor in 1974 when it was two years old. I cut my teeth on it. Thirty years later, we"ve rented the farm, are selling off most of the equipment (almost exclusively John Deere) but I don"t intend to see this little Massey (dad always referred to her as “Mighty Mouse”) sold in my life-time. I spent a lot of hours on her. Hope to go through her completely some day. In the mean time, she will be handling mowing duties pulling a 6 foot Woods finishing mower we just purchased.

God bless,
Willie G <><

I'm 19 and I have a 1650 cockshutt diesel. I use it for farm work almost daily. I grow some hogs and cash crops and my brother grows some chickens, turkeys and ducks.

We also have a B-250 diesel that I'm trying to restore- not sucessfuel yet... :)- On that theme does anyone know where I can get a return injector line for it? Just a thought.

God bless,

This is fun
Actually, just turned 42 today. Grew up in a small rural Ohio town, moved to the "big" city to go to college after a tour of duty in the Army... but longed to be back in the country. Bought some land, with a broken down old farm house, and have spent the last 12 years fix'in it up. Always wanted a tractor, bought a broken down TO, and have spent the last 6 years fix'in it up... see a trend here? I still commute to the big city for my day job as a Chem E., but aspire to someday becoming a real farmer when I learn enough to transition my hobby farming from being an expense, to actually breaking even, or even making a profit. Have wife and two daughters, the only guy in the house, my garage, and "working on my tractor" are my #1 excuse to escape the girlie stuff, and visiting the in-laws.

Well.. I am 62, a mechanical engineer, with 4 kids (2 corporate VPs, a psychologist and a professional musician) and one grandchild. I grew up on a small farm in Ohio. My father bought me my first tractor (1951-TO-30, $1900 with a plow and a 2-row cultivator in February, 1952). I was 9. I learned to drive it that winter and by spring I was plowing (2-14s) following behind my Dad on his JD A (also 2-14s). In 1957, the fergie became the planting tractor and I graduated to a 1957 JD720D (which I loved and will have again someday). But I left the farm and went to college, worked the past 40 years in engineering in California with mostly mechanical hobbies along the way.. Recently I was transferred to Indiana (about 300 miles from the Ohio farm) so I bought me a fergie to restore (a 1954 TO-30) and keep it at the famly farm in Ohio. I might add, I am also a private pilot (single engine land/Instrument). But just like someone said a long time ago, “You can take the boy out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the boy!!!” I loved to drive those tractors.. I hope that this one will provide as much pleasure.. Jim in OH

I am 62, married for second time, now 6 years. First wife passed in '89 after 22 yrs marriage. My current wife and I have 5 children and 4 grandchildren between us. I was raised a country boy, but I'm retired from a 33 year banking career in Information Technology. We live between our Richmond house (wife works in Richmond) and not elegant or fancy but functional farm house in Appomattox County, about 10 miles from where Lee surrendered to Grant almost exactly 140 years ago, in Virginia. I'm a lifelong resident of VA, except for stint in Navy Submarine Force of the Atlantic (Sublantflt) in the 60s. We have 2 TO-30s, an F40, a Ford NAA, an Allis Chalmers CA, and an Oliver OC-46 crawler/loader. Had a TO-35 but sold it to stepson. Wife is into old International Scouts and has two running and one for parts, all are Scout 80s and newest is a 1965. I also have Alfa Romeo Duetto (1967), which I bought from stepdaughter (stored 10 years) and got running and on the road. It is just like car Dustin Hoffman drove in The Graduate. It needs restoration but that takes lots of moola. I just enjoy driving it.

I turned 43 in March and for 40 of those years I was strictly a city slicker. But being a Mining Engineer, I never had a problem getting my hands dirty.

Divorced at 37, then I fell in love with a farm girl who has been riding horses all her life and I've been living rural ever since. We bought & moved into our place just before the snow fell last year, so we have a LOT OF WORK ahead of us. We have 3 of her horses with us plus 2 "loaners" for my daughters.

My 14 year old twin daughters live with us now. They love to ride and never complain about all the work (and believe me - they work). My youngest daughter lives with her mother in Southern Ontario. Myself, I don't ride. I shovel ***, throw bales of hay, fix fences, and try to let her focus on barrel racing (she's among the best in the province & beyond).

Here's a picture of her making a riding ring to set up her barrels in.

Thanks for all the great advice, help & entertainment on this forum. Stay safe, everyone.

Gary

I'm 17 years old and bald. I got my first fergy from my dad who won it in a card game. Now I have three, but only the original one runs.Sometimes my foster sister rides in the wagon behind the fergy, but we have to make sure her chair is tied down. This web site sure is a help to me with these tractors (even though your advise only keeps 1 runnin). Sometimes I do the shoppin for mom with it cause I don't have my license, but I can still drive through town on the tractor and the police don't bother me. I also have a collection of tractor calenders and I even hve one form 1989 boy, it's old....for a calender. All together I have 11 calenders with 7 old fergy pictures total. Maybe I will post them so you can see them. Well I gotta go and thanks for everything guys.....DUGGER!

I got interested in tractors just a few years ago when we bought a cottage and I needed significant something to cut grass. This ol city boy bought my first tractor, restored it, and now can"t get enough of the old iron. I never thought this would be so much fun. Shopping for my next project now.

Well, Barry - you sure opened the can! I think this is the longest thread I've seen! Interesting to note that nearly half the responses are from Canucks. And I'm another one - from Fredericton. Good to see the young folks too.

Me - 67, wife of 43 years (and still speaking!), daughter chem engineer keeping Edmonton water drinkable, son (with his 2 year old son) booting me out of sod growing/landscape/nursery business of 30+ years. And he's a better manager than I ever was! Commercial pilot, instructor, missed that incredible airline pension option in '65 when the family took me on another career path. Pension didn't mean much back then.....

Learned to drive on dad's '39 AC "B" (still have it in the fleet) about the end of the war - before driving a bike, like the chap below.

Landscaping with an OC3 dozer and 9N,8Ns, first 35 diesel in '76. Fitted like a tailor-made suit (half the fuel, twice the performance), dumped the Fords. Added another dozen or so MF's over the next decade, rebuilt them all - except the instant reverse transmissions in a couple - never needed to.

Incredible tractors, incredible group here. Always learning something from you all.

Especially Big Dean. And 2 days ago, Ben (UK) told us about the hydraulic return port in the top cover of the transmission case. All the swearing I've done about that problem, and there it was....

Thanks, all!

Hi Barry -

Compost works wonders. Slow release food, soil builder. 1/2 to an inch depth in a circle around the trees - a foot out if the trees are a foot high.

Too much compost needed? a tablespoon or so per foot of height of a 6 to 10% Nitrogen garden fertilizer (6-12-12, half as much of 12-24-24), same pattern.

Annual applications if you wish.

At transplant time, a drink of RX-15 or 10-52-15 will help a lot.

And simply keeping competition (grass) away in a 2 - 3 foot circle will double the growth rate in the first 5-10 years. Round-up works well, one of the safer and more environmentally benign products. (Keep it off the pine foliage and bark.)

Jack

47 years old, 3 kids, and one grandson born Jan. 28th - who is quite a distraction from tractor repair.
I am in the high tech business, nothing to do with tractors or mechanical things at all.
Been married twice and am not now. Life has been quite a ride and mechanical stuff has been a kind of therapy through a lot of it; I think it"s a good hobby - you always seem to be able to learn more.
Along with Fergies I have an old Triumph car (with a few engine parts common to the TEA) that I"ve been restoring for (gulp) 8 years now, and I also spend time helping improve the health of poverty-stricken people in Guatemala.

54, retired secondary English head, married 32 years, one son, 25, a photographer.

Currently rebuilding an old stone house on the family property prior to moving there.

In September of 2007 the International Plowing Match will occur on our land and adjacent properties. I'll be working on the education committee in preparation for that, as well as trying to get the farm back into production after a few years of idleness.

Unpleasant part: I have a personality clash with the TEA 20 I inherited from my dad. I get along fine wiht the MF 35 diesel I bought last fall, but every time I look at that gray beast I want to find a home for it. Any collectors want a potential trailer queen?

I'm 43 been married for 20 years this July, two kids a boy and girl,14 and 12, and this Fergie is the first tractor I can call mine. Dad had a couple of Fords and I did a lot of work on a NAA at the airport where I used to be a flight instructor. Now I fly 757 and 767's across the pond (Atlantic) about 5 or six times a month. Off to Ireland tomorrow.

I have to say this has been one of the most friendly and informative websites I have found.

I grew up on a farm in MN and my dad bought a 1951 TO 20 Ferguson in the late fifties. It had a hard farm life with six boys running it, but I acquired it and now have it back in pretty good shape and use it a lot for my hobbies. I also have a MF 165 Diesel to putz with. Have a three and half year old son and one on the way.(maybe next week) I love tractors, always have always will.I grew up on a farm and drove a tractor before I could ride a bike. We had a farmall super c (still have it) A ford 8n, a case 430 ,a massey 255.A few years ago I bought a Ferguson 20-85 and rebuilt it,did the motor plus all new tires.I call it my little skidder. When I'm not plowing snow with it I'm in the woods skidding out firewood(I spent 2 hours the other night in the woods working, before even eating supper)Some people relax by playing golf or fishing or sitting on a beach,me I throw the saw on the back of the tractor and go find a dead tree to cut.Oh I almost forgot by day I'm a warehouse manager,by night a tractor nut. Kids eat everything up as fast as I can grow it. Love the farm, gives me peace and quiet and I feel at home when I am on my tractors. Hi Everybody,
My name is Tom. I am 60 and just bought my first Ferguson TE20...I love it! I enjoy my other toys too. There is a green one, red one, and an orange one with five little ones mixed in. I have been married to the same woman for 39 years, have two children. My daughter was born in 1970 and my son in 1990. We had a long dry spell. Two grandsons too, 1989 and 1990. I am just about to retire as a science educator. Can't wait to play all day long with my tractors. Is there any better hobby than collecting old tractors????

58 - sometimes feel 10 yrs older - From east side of the pond.
Started in a general garage doing everything from trucks to tractors and cement mixers. Spent a short period working on armoured vehicle development, then moved to a garage specialising in high performance stuff.
In "75 started my own business - auto and marine engineering, which started 90/10 and became 10/90 auto/marine.
During the time often helped out on the family farm, driving Ransome, TE20, Standard diesel fergie, 35, 135. Done everything - ploughing, scarifying, rotovating, slashing (remember the Wolseley Swipe?) subsoiling, harrowing, discing, hoeing and banking, fert & liming, spraying, irrigation, hedge trimming and combine harvesting. And a few hundred hours on a chainsaw and posthole digger. Loved working on the land - sad to see the way things have gone.

old git in Michigan in reply to Barry from Stirling, 04-14-2005 12:00:37
I am 60, a retired scientist (from GlaxoSmith Kline,a pharma company). I have two kids and the same wife I started with.

Because I was responsible for chemical development in the UK and US, I spent a lot of time in the UK and lived part-time on farm there. Fergusons were quite common and they had great farm shows to attend on the weekend.

My uncle had a farm near Lapeer Michigan, and guess what vehicle was the first thing I ever drove? It was of course a T0-20. And for our Candian colleagues, my uncle and cousins are Canadians living mostly in Ontario.

Quite a diverse group these Fergie nuts, eh?

 where I worked in reply to John(UK), 04-15-2005 09:48:40
We had a number of sites around London and elsewhere in the UK and Ireland. I considered my home base to be our labs in Tonbridge. But I also worked in Harlow, Cork Ireland, Welwyn Garden City and at the old Beecham HQ on the A4, between the Heathrow and the city. (close actually to the Fuller's Brewery, which makes my favorite beer, London Pride).

I had a place there on a farm just south of Crockham Hill, near Edenbridge in Kent (very close to the Surrey border). I lived in a converted oast house.. I did enjoy those times!

Thanks for that George, but you were at the wrong end of the UK to me. The Beecham H.O we all know is the one in the local town where it all began before the merger with Smith-Kline, it is now part of the local College of Further Education or some such. Worked near the brewery did you, who did you have to bribe for that posting....lol....Regards....John

Hello all:
I am 60, had three kids 2 girls 1 boy, 2 granddaughters. Retired 6 years ago where I worked for the Provincial Gov't. as a Conservation Officer for 33.3 years. Gave up raising horses and just putter around on my Fergie keeping the land from growing in, cutting wood, and cutting gemstones.

Well you guys make me feel a little old but I'm still kickin. I'm 71, married to the same lady for 48 years (got lucky the first time), have three kids (2 boys and a girl, she's the mechanic in the lot), 3 grand children, and a dog. My 1951 TO-20 is my first tractor and I've learned a lot from you young guys. Really appriciate the help. And I too am glad to see a few teenagers that are interested in mechanics. I sometimes think the really good mechanics are a dieing breed. Lots of praise to all you folks.
