I am switching over to a alternator and was wondering if I need the ballast resistor if I am using a 12 volt coil. I have had it on for a couple years and havent had any problem with it without a resistor because I am not using the 6 volt coil. also the warning light what does it do.? any help would be appreciated

Based on the info. you have provided:
If your generator was 12 volts and I assume that your alternator will be 12 volts then you can use the coil as it is now wired, that is with the resistor wired in series.
If you are going from 6 volts to 12 volts and there was no resistor in the circuit then you should wire it in.
The light I believe is to let you know that your alternator is NOT charging.
I just installed a 3 wire Delco Remy. These are nice and simple due to internal regulator and IMHO better than the 1 wire since it doesn"t require you to rev. the engine to begin charging.
