I have a 1948 TO-20 that is in good shape. I took this to a shop for work (replace PTO seal) and I believe that they used GL5 gear lube in the Trans. and Diff. Can any damage be done to these or the Hydraulic sys. ?? Would the experts please comment on this . Thanks in advance for your help.
Marty

Here is my spin and no guarantees. If they used GL 5 that does not meet the military specs for GL4 then you may have problems with GL 5 damaging the yellow metal. Supposedly some GL5 but not all meets the military specs for GL4. GL 1 is what is called for .

5 imp.galls or 24 US quarts to fill it if completely empty, just pour it in and leave it to level out for about an hour or so, it will be correct.

Hi Marty...If done recently I doubt any damage. I'd drain it (3 drain plugs) and fill it( 1 fill hole) with GL1. Don't know if flush is necessary or not, and don't know what to flush it with. Info may be in the archives. I'm sure the capacities and part numbers are there. Good luck, have fun...Mike

Should be GL1 as it has NO detergent additives. GL5 from what I have read DOES have detergent additives and it will attack the brass spacers and bearing surfaces in the transmission and Hydraulics.

GL1 is the only type of oil recommended for these old tractors. GL4 is classed as Mild extreme pressure lubricant for transmissions. Remember that you are using the oil for the hydraulic system not just for a gearbox and rear axle. GL4 and GL5 both have additives that corrode the brass parts in hydraulic pumps and differential assemblies.

I went to NAPA today and they've stopped carrying GL-1. I've looked all over but everyone seems to only have GL-5. I'm no chemist but how can detergents attack brass?
