Hello all, I am in the process of replacing the entire exhaust system on my 20. I already have the manifold and muffler which I ordered from this site. Does anyone know where I can find a muffler clamp and also piping from manifold to muffler fo a horizontal exhaust. Is it the same as an 8N?

Would anyone do a vertical instead?

I did the same thing last year. The clamp is indeed the same as a 8N clamp. Chances are your new exhaust manifold will have a 3 bolt flange with a add-on conversion piece to bolt-on so you can use a stock TO-20 replacement exhaust. It works just fine.
The horizonal muffler and exhaust pipe should all be a one piece unit. I'm guessing the TO muffler is somehow different than a 8N muffler because the part numbers don't match like they do for some of the other parts that are identical. Both the new manifold and muffler will rust right before your very eyes as soon as you fire it up, if you don't paint them with hi-temp. paint first. Highly recommended.

My manifold came painted in a coarse black, do I need to strip that and reapply high temp paint.

Hmmmm... my manifold wasn't painted when I got it... just covered with oil, which I had to clean off before I painted it. My muffler was painted silver, it was junk paint that burned off the first day.

I'd say, Yeah, if you are going to spend the money on high temp. paint, you should strip or sand blast the paint off the manifold. Might be worth putting a call in to where ever you got it to ask if they might have already used a high temp. paint... although I doubt it, probably cheap paint just to keep it from rusting while sitting on the shelf.

Vertical exhaust in reply to MattinRaleigh, 03-12-2005 19:27:52
I bought a vertical exhaust pipe and muffler but have not installed it. As usual, too many other things to do.

I bought because I had seen a lot of these in England when I worked there, and I liked the look.

I think I got my at Walt's

Should be able to find a clamp same place you got the muffler and the manifold. I couldn't swear to it, but I believe the clamp is the same as the 8N.
Personally, I wouldn't do a verticle muffler. I believe the support bracket attaches to the hood which means to open the hood you have to undo the bracket.

The TO20 should be the same as a TO30 for the exaust and on the 30 it does not fasten to the hood and if you are working mowing tall dry grass or raking any hay or similuar jobs with dry material underneeth then use the vertical, They were developed because so many of the Ford 9N, 2N, 8N, TO 20 & TO30 burnt up from that horisantal muffler working in dry loose grass, straw conditions and some kettching on the exaust pipe, muffler and heat would set it on fire, if it fits any of those conditions then use vertical, but if you are using a FEL in a low building then use horsintal because of same reasons of fire, show only makes no difference, plowing or discing vertical will not set your foot on fire, horsintal will

I think the muffler and exhaust pipe is all one unit. You will need the clamp at the exh manifold and some sort of support under the foot rest.
