I just acquired the TO30 that my father-in-law purchased new. He says that he bought it in 1951 and that it is a 1951 model. The serial number would indicate that it is a 1952. (TO84651) This tractor has a 12 volt system on it and he (F-I-L) says that this is how it came. He did not convert it. His brother claims to have purchased one exactly like it on the same day and it was also a 12 volt. Is this possible? Also, on this tractor you have to lift the gearshift to get to the start - reverse side of the pattern, on my 1950 TO20 you do not. Ddoes this mean that the TO20 is broken?

Thanks for the replies, I suspected that it might have been a dealer conversion. Guess we will never know. Thanks again.

Is the starter motor the same as the one on the 6 volt versions of the TO30 or was that updated also?

The first US-produced Ferguson tractor to have a factory 12v system was the TO-35. The early 35s were 6v with the 12v kicking in at 161250 in the the the Fall of 1955. If any TO-20s or 30s were sold new with the 12v, they were converted by the dealer or the distributor prior to sale.

The tractors were made that way, the idea of lifting the lever was to prevent selecting reverse accidentally, but with time and operators not lifting the lever so high or maybe at all it gets worn away. We here in UK had 12v introduced in 1951 and I always did wonder why you guys only got it after the introduction of the TO35 and in 1955
