Need help with replacing camshaft nut.............

My TO35 is eating distributors. From what I have learned from you guys here, sounds like the nut on the end of the cam is loose or gone. Question is, would some of you be kind enough to give me some ABC instructions on how to do this and little things to watch out for. I am familiar with engines, just never went into a tractor motor before. If someone can help, you could post here, email me, or refer me to an old post on it. Thanks, RonW

What does it do to the distributor? Does it make a noise? I have a TO-35, Its running fine but I would like to know what to look for on this serious problem?Thanks Gregg.

Hey Ron...I had the same problen last year with a TO-20. To get the the nut, you'll have to take off the radiator, fan blade, and disconnect the governor. You'll have to put a jack under the end of the oilpan, disconnect the front end, and jack the engine up enough to get to the engine pulley. After you pull the engine crank pully, you can unbolt the timing gear cover....be careful that the ball weights (if that's what you have with the governor) don't fall all over when you take the cover off. I had a bad ball weight retainer in mine and the bearings went all over. Luckily, they didn't fall in the oil pan. Anyway....after you get the timing cover off, you will see the camshaft timing gear and the nut (should) be there. Mine was there but wasn't even finger tight. I've heard where they weren't there at all. Sometimes they fall into the oil pan. The nut should be torqued down to about 75ft. pounds. If you take the timing gear off for any reason, be careful you don't loose the pin when sliding the cam gear off. Also, if you do pull the gear check the camshaft thrust plate and make sure that it id torqued down to 25ft. pounds

Nick. Had to do the samething last Dec. I was able to get every thing done at my very slow pace in about 8 hours. If I were 40 years younger It would probably take 4 hours. Do be careful with removing the govener cover, the ball weights will fall out. If one or two fall into the oil pan you may be able to fish it out with a magnetic pickup. Same with the Cam Nut if it also fell in the pan. When reassembling the ball weights and retainer, I used Petrolium Jelly (Vaseline) to hold them inplace while I re-installed the weight assembly. The Vaseline will wash off in the oil and not hurt anything. Good luck.
