We have recently purchased a TO-30 with a 12 volt conversion that was not charging the battery. We had the alternator rebuilt and replaced the ammeter gage but the ammeter gage still registers nothing (+ or -) and now we have driven the tractor enough that the battery has gone dead (re-charged with a batery charger initailly) so we now know the system is not recharging properly. As we did not do the 12volt conversion we wonder if it was done correctly. Does anyone have any wiring diagrams for a working 12volt conversion and/or any advice to help? Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason...Charge the battery and try the following. With the engine running, use a jumper wire and go from the Bpos.(big 1 wire) lightly touch the 2 small terminals 1 at a time. One of them should give a light arc. This is what we called "tickling the alternator". Usually once is sufficient, hovever, I've heard some folks install a permanant jumper with a toggle switch to excite the alt.each time it wont charge. Good luck, have fun!!! Mike

Hi Jake and my frend John U.K.. All alternators and, or, tractors are NOT the same. All the diagrams in the world will not "excite" a 1 wire Delco alternator if it doesn't want to go. I've worked on British autos in the U.S. for years...Had British and American race cars for too many years, and found that some worked on some cars, and some didn't. ... For what it's worth... Mike

I converted a TO-30 to 12 volt. It was a 1 wire system and to get the alternator to charge I had to rev up the engine. I did this some years back and dont have tractors anymore. It may be you have something like this.

I have to rev up my engine every time I start it up. Once it starts charging you can idle it back down and it will remain charging. Until you shut it off. When you start it up again it won't charge until you rev it up again.
