I have a TE-20 with a continental Z-120 engine
can I change to a Z-129 without any trouble?

I believe you can but you'll need the spacer that goes on the right front axle carrier where the engine attaches. You'll need to replace the entireengine not just the block. The rear axles are differentand some of the chasis parts are different. You need to look at the parts manual. Personally, the additional 5 hp isn't worth it.

Why not rebuild the Z120?

Kinda expensive back up! Maybe someone else has tried this before and has had no problems, but I'll share my line of reasoning with you.The TO-20 and the TO-30 have different powertrains per the parts manual. I don't know what this means , pratically speaking but more horsepower and torque usually means increased strength requirements for the driveline parts. It's only about 7.5 % change in power and torque so I gotta' believe there is enough margin in the old iron to take that but I'm not sure. Not knowing what the design margins are, it's hard to say if there is a weak link waiting to bite you somewhere. That's why I would stick with the original motor. But as I am engineer, and I'm just naturally conservative that way.
I hope this helps you.

Sam Ga.

Can the z120 be rebored or sleeved to 129 or 134 specs. A few more hp will make a difference.

We had two Fords with about 8 hp and 20 cubes difference. You could tell it on the bushhog and the plow.

My 2003 Value built catalog shows their "stock" rebuilding kit of sleeves for the Z-120 increases bore from 3-3/16 to 3-5/16". The Z-145 stock bore it shows as 3-3/8". There were also increased strokes with the larger engines that seemed to about use the same basic block casting.

They also show a rebuilt Z-120 short block for a price.

By reboring a presume you mean over sizing the holes in the block so that you could put in oversized sleeves. The last time I looked at a Z129, the castings looked pretty thin to me to do that but I'm no expert on this. Maybe there exist some oversized sleeves that would allow the displacement to be increased without reboring the block, however. My real concern is that there might be a some weak link in the powertrain that can't take the power increase because the TO20 and TO-30 are different and I don't know why. It maybe that the difference is due to lessons learned on the TO-20 or just to make a service or cost improvemnet. Not having any more info just makes an old engineer like me cautious. Someone on this forum may have done one of these mods 20 years ago and has put thousands of hours of hard work on the Z129 powered TO-20 with abolutely no problem. If he has, maybe he'll respond and my concerns will be found unwarented.
