clutch on the left, brakes on both sides towards the back as TX said.

Think PTO needs to be engaged for lift to work. Lift something like a bush hog or a transport box, heavier the better. Lift it right up, then switch the tractor off. (best time to do this i find is after you have tried everything else and are stopping to ask questions etc. See how far it drops while you are talking. Mine (MF135) will drop all the way in a couple of hours, which is OK. As long as its not flying down as soon as you touch the clutch youll be ok.

Yes, try all of the gears. Run the tractor at full throttle at some point as well - lots of people keep them at a low RPM when they try them, some tractors will run C**p after theyve been at full throttle for a few minuites - there designed to run flat out for long periods of time - test it!

Test the brakes as they are a pain to replace (although relatively cheap if you do it yourself)

Nice way to test them I find is to put them on hard, put it in gear (1st, 2nd doesnt really matter) and gently ease off the clutch, tractor should struggle if the brakes are good, (obviously depends which gear your in) This will also allow you to feel the clutch - if you can come right off the clutch without the tractor moving you have good brakes but need a new clutch!

Tractor will probably stall doing this if the brakes are good - not a bad thing, think of it as a good thing - sows you have very good brakes!

Had a TO-20 and have a MF 35. Yours in somewhere inbetween.

TO-20 had a brake pedal on the rear; one on each side; Extremely awkward to operate. Clutch pedal was on the left over the footrest.

35 has left and right brake over right foot rest. Either use singly for turning tight circles, or flip the lock bar (to use them jointly) and use for normal forward/reverse braking.

As I recall the 20 had a transmission driven lift so you had to have the engine clutch engaged to get the 3pt or PTO to work. Fall rate is/was about as stated below.

Pump on the 35 (mine) is operated off the Live PTO clutch pedal/shaft. Have to let the clutch out half way to get the pump to run and hence lift the 3 pt. Pushing the clutch all the way down shuts the pump off and the 3pt (deck) falls. Rate dependent on condition, temp, oil vis, and load lifted. With a 5' mower in the summer mine will fall in about 15 sec (fairly "too" fast) and in the winter about 30 sec using 90w GL-1. Since the lift works as desired otherwise, I find it non-essential to replace the lift piston rings. Additionally, the PTO is disengaged when the clutch pedal is bottomed out and engages when the pump starts (clutch half way out).
