Hello all. The negative lead from battery is fixed to solenoid, which is slack. "Idea":- is it possible to simply connect lead from battery negative terminal, missing solenoid, straight to starter motor?
Reason:- Solenoid is slack, frightened to tighten up too much and bad connections. Intentions:- To repair/renew all electrical connections, clean to get GOOD connections. Battery has plenty power to turn over tractor and pressure is coming out of exhaust but no smoke to indicate combustion taking place (condenser, points replaced).

Thanks for any help

You can never miss out the solenoid from any starter circuit, the solenoid is a switch. If you need to replace the original type of switch that Jim W talks about that fits on top of the clutch housing under the battery and operates by the gear lever, you can still get them from "Sparex" part number S42538. Any local tractor dealer should be able to get it for you or you can buy it from this site too, go to top of page and click on H.Ferguson then click on parts...the part number on here will be 42538 S though. No smoke indicates no fuel being burnt, is there a spark or is there no fuel in the carb??? Points should be .015" and plugs should be .035" (Champion N21 or equivalent)on a TED 12v. Good idea to move earth lead from dash panel (if it is still there) down to one of the bolts holding the starter.

Yes you can do that, however the starter motor will run continuously :)
At least I think so by your description. If by solenoid you mean the starter switch on the top centre of your bell housing, you can usually repair these if you take care. Note the studs to which the cables are attached are copper so be gentle.
Also the position of this switch is deliberately adjustable; when you loosen the four bolts you get to move it fore and aft so that it engages well when the shift lever is moved to S.
