I rebuilt my 23C a year ago. It started running real rough and kept blowing out the copper washer seals on the injector tips. I pulled the head and had it redone for the 2nd time. I have not put it back on yet . Was wondering if I could Tap it for glow plugs, If so how. Would they go in the intake ports?? Also any ideas on how to get the injectors to seal. Seems like the ports where the injectors fit are a bit pitted I tried to smooth them out with valve lapping compound.

MATT , I JUST REBUILT MY 23C OVER THE SUMMER , MINE HAD GLOW PLUGS BUT THE HEAD WAS CRACKED , FOUND ANOTHER ONE IN SALVAGE ( AFTER MANY TRIES ) COULD GET GLOW PLUGS AT $50 PIECE , COULD NOT FIND RESISTOR , ENDED UP MAKING A FITTING TO PUT EARLY GM 6.2 DIESEL GLOWS IN , THEY GO RIGHT UNDER THE INJECTOR IN THE PRE COMBUSTION CHAMBER.THR GM PLUGGS ARE 12V SO I DIDN'T NEED THE RESISTER .WIRED THEM IN PARALLEL . I ALSO HAD INJECTOR PROBLEMS, ENDED UP MAKING MY OWN COPPER WASHERS OUT OF SHEET COPPER FROM LOCAL HARDWARE . DRILLED CENTER HOLE , SHARPENED A PIECE OF PIPE AND PUNCHED THEM OUT OF SHEET . DID THIS FOR A COUPLE OF INJECTOR LINES TOO . GOOD LUCK . MINE HASN'T BEEN TOGETHER LONG ENOUGH TO TELL YOU HOW WELL IT WILL HOLD UP BUT SO FAR SO GOOD .

Matt, I hate diesels, nasty smelly things, but I am just biased I suppose. However, a lower cost option to glow plugs may be to use an old Royal Navy trick, as follows:

Fire up an old paraffin blow lamp, and get it good and hot, then extinguish the flame, and direct the warm paraffin vapour coming from the nozzle/shroud into the inlet manifold while cranking the engine over.

I am told it never fails to start a hesitant diesel. It will probably also cause some odd looks . . . . . . . . .

Following on from txblu's comment, I am currently rebuilding a blue and orange thing called a Super Dexta, fitted with glow plug for its 3cyl diesel. That glow plug is also in the inlet manifold, close to the block, and just downstream of the cold start nozzle (don't know its real name, not being a dieselhead). 40 seconds was supposed to be enough to start it on even the coldest mornings.

A full conversion on your head to the Arctic spec would be nice (and $$) - but you won't be able to swear at your tractor when it doesn't start. Depending on your budget, txblu's comment might give you a good project basis. If it works for Dorfs, it probably works for 23c's too.

Just some thoughts. Enjoy.

A thought. My '64 Ford 2000 4 cyl diesel has 2 glow plugs embedded in the intake manifold. Look like huge sparkplugs.

Don't know their current capacity, but have what looks like a 12 AWG wire connecting them to a husky switch under the dash.

About 30 sec to 1 min of them prior to starting works well.

I have drilled and tapped the intake manifold casting on at least 2 engines and have had no problems. Even though your manifold wasn't made for them, might work for you.

Mark

To convert that head on a 23c they drill the head and tap it to accept glow plugs straight into the combustion chambers (i.e straight below the injectors) There was a small washer that was available from CAV that fitted under the injector, it was originally designed to protect the injector nozzle from excess heat but it in effect makes a new seat for the injector to sit on. Its quite possible other diesels use such a thing, try your local diesel shop, you may get lucky. The diameter was slightly smaller than the end of the injector nozzle and it was quite thin you could call it corrugated I suppose.

I saw an article on the Friends of Ferguson page that also suggested removing the precombustion chambers. This supposedly imitates direct injection.
