A tip for all of you friends with a hard to start 35.

Several persons I have known during the years have had FE-35s with the 23 C Standard Diesel. All have complained that they are very hard to start. In my younger days I drove one of theese myself as I worked on a farm every summer during the harvest. We glowed it for about 1-1,5 minute and still it took more than one minute running on the starter before it ignited. You could write your name in all the smoke.... Rolling was the easiest way to start without killing the battery and cables. A engine heater was a must even during summer.

That farmer have now given me that oldie from my younger days. He had it standing there out in the rain and snow for more that 12 years without starting it.

It was still all the same, lots and lots of light gray smoke while trying to start. I have now checked out the whole glowing system. I found one burnt glow plug, the plugs was wrongly connected to each other, and there were several bad connections under the "instrument panel".

The last 2 days it have been around 0 degrees C and snowing here in northern Norway. Now when starting, I glow for about 20 seconds, and then it takes only 2-3 seconds before the engine fire up !!!!! Nobody here believs it before they try themselves. Now I measure about 7,3 volts between the first glow plug and minus side of the battery (ground) when glowing.

It seems that the glowing system have not worked on this tractor for more than 30 years. I guess there are many 35s out there with glowing failures. (Sorry, for the length of this, but I am so happy :-) !!!!!

Is there any way to fit a 23C with glow plugs that did not come with them ??? If so how is the head drilled???

Dont they all have them ??? Mine are located just below the injection valve on each cylinder.

I have seen a a newer 35 that, in addition to the 4 in the cyl head, also had a kind of heater/glover in the air manifold, and connected to a diesel pipe there. Mybe to make a kind of easy igniting diesel "fume".
