Hi guys, some advice here please. Our tractor came with a stuck engine but after lots of persuation, and removing the head, she is turning again in fact she's been turned over quite a bit on the starting handle to make sure the hydraulic pump is working. My concern is, the workshop manual says that the liners should sit level with or slightly below the block, but ours are sitting slightly above, have they come up whilst turning over without the head on? will I have to try to press them down now? or will they go down ok as I put the head back on? Thanks in advance, Ali.

These engines have very loose fitting liners, unlike anything I've seen elsewhere. They can move with the head removed but will soon push back down.

These engines have had a starting problem from new and are sensitive to compression. If you've got the head off and the engine's been siezed I'd replace liners and rings, and preferably the big end bearings as well as these tend to fail when the compression is brought back up. At least hone the bores and fit new rings.

The liners should be proud of the block face to form a seal with the cylinder head gasket, they should normally stand proud by about .005". You should make sure that the cylinder head gasket is fitted the correct side up. When the engine was new the liners would quite easily slide out but now with a bit of age about them its possible that they are stuck in the block but don't take any chances by turning the engine over without making sure that the liners can't move.

Ali - relax, they will not have come up while turning without the head. They usually need shrinking (freezer) to make em fit in the first place, so if they are THAT loose, you have bigger problems . . . . . Unlikely.

I would leave them as they are - if they are only very slightly proud, it is probably not worth the aggro of moving them.
