Howdy All,

I just bought a new thermostat for my TO-30 from a Massey Ferguson supply house. It doesn"t resemble the orginal one at all and it doesn"t fit in the upper hose. I took it back to check again but they say it"s right. So I have a two-part question:
1) Those of you that have recently changed your thermostat, was it identical to the original?
2) Is your upper radiator hose just a straight piece of 1 1/2" standard radiator hose or does it have some feature that would accomodate a thermostat of a different diameter?
Thanks! Them Massey guys stumped me today and I"m more that a little cornfused!

Thanks to you all for your info and advice. I think the problem is solved. I gave up on the stat from the Massey/Ferguson place and went elsewhere. I was unaware it was the same thermostat that is used in the 8N/9N. Knowing that fact might have meant success at Carquest early on. I got the correct one from a place in Eugene OR called Jerry"s Tractors, I think, to give credit where credit is due. But if that"s not the right name I"ll post it when I find the invoice.

You might be able to use the in-hose thermostats that were sold for Early Ford V8's. Try Little Dearborn Auto Parts in Minneapolis

massey sells two thermostats for the to-20 and 30 the one in the hose that you need but some 20s an 30s [and i have one] that used a stat like most autos use the one that goes in the goose neck

The spec of the correct thermostat should be:- Crack opem temp. 60 deg C fully open temp 93 deg C maximum valve lift 1/4"

If it's the right thermo, it should fit in that hose, but it may be a bit tight. Yes, that upper hose is just a straight piece of rubber hose, 1 1/2"...?, OK, whatever it needs to be to mate-up with the radiator and manifold necks, that sounds right.
I got a new thermo a few years ago, the new one had a bit different shape on the ends, but the OD was the same and it worked. The thermo body will probably have a rib around it to make a tight seal in the hose, might need to get it wet to help slide it in the hose. Warning ! The thermo will only work right if installed in the right direction, it should have a flow arrow stamped on the side. Put it in backwards and you will overheat your engine real fast. It should be positioned as close to the engine as possible.

I've had similar experiences with Massey dealers, they don't support these old tractors very well. If your not buying an $500 part for a $50,000 tractor, they treat you like a nuisance.
Try a New Holland dealer, TSC, or anyone else selling Tisco parts, or some web sites. They should all be able to get the right thermo. I got one from a N.H dealer a few years ago and was real happy with it... I think the thermo might be the same as the ones used in Ford N tractors, not positive though. Suprisingly, I didn't see a thermo listed in the parts section on this web site..., but I saw one on ----- -- for ~$11.00.
Good luck!

The plot thickens..... .I just went to a Carquest store (and TWO other parts stores and TWO other tractor supply stores) and no one had anything near what the OEM thermostat is, nor could they find anything close in their catalogs. Even when approaching it just as a Continental Z129 the best the Carquest guy could do was a stat straight out of a small block Chevy. So, IF the stat I got from the first MF place is right, then I"m back to the hose question. Is it just a piece of straight off-the-shelf 1 1/2 inch radiator hose or do I need to replace that too? This little problem shouldn"t be so frustrating! And by the way, John (UK), Thanks to you too, and amen to your thoughts!

I think you have the wrong stat. To save frustration,(some business' are snootish) I suggest returning it and instead buying one from CarQuest or NAPA. I have bought from CarQuest(NAPA is always higher) and always received the correct part. Your top hose sounds like mine, a smooth, constant diameter, molded hose that the stat slides into.

Hi Ray, Thanks for your thoughts. I just found a local Carquest Store, so I'm headed that way later.

When I purchased my TE20 about 15 yrs ago, it didn"t have a thermostat. It had other cooling problems too but thats another story(s). I found a fellow locally that carry"s parts for older tractors and bought a thermostat from him. It is a VERY tight fit and it will bulge the upper hose out somewhat where it fits which should be at the end closest the gooseneck on the head, but it does fit and work fine! I don"t recall where he gets his parts so unfortunately I don"t know the part#. You"d probably do well to return it and try another source for it.
I also run a about a 60/40 antifreeze to water mixture and haven"t had any cooling problems since I corrected the various problems and returned the tractor back to stock.
Good luck

Hi, Volfandt,
Thank you for responding. I'd expect even the correct thermostat to bulge the hose a bit. The one the dealer sold me is a dead ringer for one that fits in a metal oulet housing. I'm off to find one someplace else!

The problems is with these parts guys they like to think they know what they are doing and a lot of them just dont and you go in to them for help and because you dont have a very good knowledge of the old tractor (that is their job not yours) they hoodwink you into buying the wrong thing. A lot of them should be fired or learn to give consideration to the guy at the counter who after all is the CUSTOMER or have they forgotten. If they dont know they should say so and contact someone who does know and save eveyone a lot of time and expense.

This is like the muffler I needed for the wifes Jeep, $75.00 because the computer said nothing else would fit. I looked in the back of the book for universal muffers and had a part # in 3min. $19.50 fits like a glove. All they know is what the computer says.
