Here is the skinny...
1949 TO-20 just died and won't start. Re-charged battery and sprayed starter fluid into manifold. Still no start. However..
The the negitive wire from the battery to the starter switch starts smoking.
To-20, 6 volt system, positive ground.
The following are 2 seasons old: coil and voltage regulator and wiring. Voltmeter does not work.
Thoughts? Ideas?
Many thanks

Hey Guys,

Sorry about the delay, I was traveling for work and I am just now getting caught up.

I check the electrical system for opens and didn't find any. Then I checked for spark and nothing. I also checked the distributor and found some cobwebs. So I am fiquiring that's where my problem lies.
I'll be stopping at TSC on night this week!

Thanks for the leads....

If your cranking the starter a lot trying to get'er started, and your wiring is getting hot... the wires might be undersized for the amps. If it is just smoking at the ends, probably dirty connection like Jerry says. One of the 1st things I did when I got my TO-20 was upgrade the primary lead to the start switch and starter with the heaviest guage wire I could find.

Have you pulled a plug and checked your spark? Sounds like no spark if starter fluid won't fire.
If you don't have a spark, check your points and condenser... cheap to replace. Check you coil resistance with a meter, should have some resistance... don't know exactly, maybe 3-4 ohms across the 6 volt terminals. If it is infinite, or zero, your coil is shot... but wouldn't really expect that on a 2 year old coil unless it was a cheapo part... which unfortuneately there are a lot of cheapo parts out there.
good luck, let us know what you find.

There is high resistance in starter power supply circuit. Check the connections and make sure the end fittings are good.
