looking for a wiring diagram for the generator to regulator. When I got the tractor the old owner had it disconnected and just charged the battery with his shop charger. He said it does not charge. I had the generater rebuilt and I am trying to hook it up.

They are both TEA 20's. The earlier version had a 80 mm piston and the later had an 85 mm piston. The reference to 2085 was to distingish it from the earlier tractor. The 2085 has more horsepower than the earlier engine. Others on this site will be able to tell you the exact serial number where the change took place.

The TE20 was sold in vaious parts of the world mainly as a TE20 or TEA20 There are a lot more versions than this but the ones you could be interested in have been mentioned. For the US and Canadian markets and for some time in Australia they were sold as a 20/80 or 20/85 the second number just relates to the engine bore size. the 20/80 was 23.9 belt horse power and was fitted up to tractor serial # 172598 (1951)then an 85mm bore engine was used (20/85) this was 28.2 belt horsepower and was fitted to end of production which was well over #500,000

Let me see if I have this straight. The TE-20 first came out with a continental engine (Z-120)prior to the Standard engine or 80mm. The continental engine was about 23bhp while the Standard engine was about 25 bhp. In 1948, the standard engine was used. Was this when it became the TE-A20 initially? Then in 1951, the engine got a boost with the 85mm engine in 1951 until the end of production? Now was this engine more equal to the continental Z-129 that was used in the TO30? Any drawbar horsepower numbers? Are parts hard to find for the standard engines?

The Nebraska test shows the TE20 had a Drawbar pull of 16.35 hp and 24.02 Belt horsepower
The TO30 test shows 19.26 Drawbar Horsepower and 27.96 Belt horsepower. I don"t have any more Nebraska figures yet. The figures I have previously quoted are from the Massey-Ferguson Service manual.

The Continental Z120 was 23.9hp
The Standard 80mm was 23.9hp
The Standard 85mm was 28.2hp
The 85mm was the Standard equivalent of the Z129 Continental. There are lots of TEA around and some places are able to get parts easier than others but there are aftermarket companies supplying spares now for these tractors

LeRoy,

Yea, you just about got it. TE-20's have a Cont. Z120 engine. TEA's have the Standard engine... etc. The only thing I have to add is that there is no distinct cut-off point for the Z120 engine. In 1948 there was a transision period where both engines were being used as the stock of Z120's was used up. Just to confuse things alittle.

The Standard engine started in 1947 and both engines were used till middle of 1948 the last Continental engine was used in tractor # 48,000. All the UK tractors have a letter after the TE to denote the model A is a Standard gas engine D is a Standard VO engine F would be a Standard Diesel and so on then you have variations on Industrial tractors and Narrow tractors and Vineyard tractors and they are all lettered differently but you only get the normal width tractors in US and Canada although I do know there are a few narrow ones over there.

John,

Thanks for the responses. Wouldn't mind having a vineyard model or one of those with the headlight on the hood with fenders.

The Vineyard tractor is a pretty cool beast, but you cant use it as a general purpose tractor as it is so narrow and lots of implements just wont fit. A lot you can get to fit by just opening the wheel widths up so you are back to a normal tractor width again then. The lighting kit you refer to was made by Lucas and had a folding arm on each side of the bonnet that carried the side lights but allowed a loader to be fitted. Occasionally you get these on Ebay I am told. If you want some pics of the Vineyard and the lighting kit email me at fergusontractors at hotmail dot com and I will send you what I have.

Jeff,

One last question. Now TE-20 started with the continental engine and had the standard engine phased in as production came up to speed. Now are those tractors that got the initial standard engines consider TE-20s or TE-A20s? Or was it the 85mm engine that made it a TE-A20?

The Contential gas engine are TE-20s
The standard Gas engines are TEA-20

There is no letter distinction between the 80mm and 85mm bored engines.

TEA. The A specifies the Standard engine; TEA20 includes both the 80 mm and 85 mm.
