Ferguson 2-furrow plow - missing tail wheel?

I'm looking at a Ferguson 2-furrow plow, but it doesn't have the tail wheel on it that I have seen in pictures. My dad says that they should have one as he thought it helped with depth control.

Otherwise, the plow has good moldboards and leading edges, but the bearings on the coulters are shot. Is the plow worth getting without this piece for $250 Canadian?

The idea of the "tail wheel" was that it was an extension of the landslide (plate that runs againt the wall of the furrow) and the reason it was spring loaded was to allow it to penetrate the ground quicker and get to its working depth faster. Some later ploughs did not have this rolling landslide, they just had a much longer flat steel one, this is fine if you are ploughing large areas, but if you are just ploughing small areas and the plough is in and out of the ground all the time its suprising how much ground has to be ploughed again to get it to full depth.

I picked one up at an auction in OK last week for $130 with a missing rolling backside and no coulters. You really do not need it. Gene

Hi Mike

I paid $100 last year for a complete one ready
to use no missing parts and no worn parts.

I removed the coulters to plow the garden
in corn and sunflowers to avoid debris to accumulate under the coulters supports and lift the plow.

I am in Quebec 75 miles north-east of Montreal.

Nice last name, Joe. :-)

Yeah, I'll see if I can talk the guy down a bit more considering how beat up the coulter bearings are. These plows don't show up down here in New Brunswick very often, and when they do, they're too expensive.
