My 1952 TEA 20-85 has a hyd. oil leak where the right lift arm attaches to the tractor. Can this be repaired from the outside or do I need to get into the rear housing?

Gary

Hi,

Had the same problem, and had to get inside the trumpet; there isn't a gasket in there, it's just a tight fit, mine was also leaking around the brake shaft; put some silicone sealer on that one. I have the 11 bolt trumpet, and couldn't find a gasket, but the local machine shop suggested a couple sheets of paper from a desk pad advertising the local bank. Each sheet .005, and I used whatever that non-hardening dark red gasket reeinforcing stuff is, and so far no problems; dimension is owing to mesh of drive shaft and ring gear.

Once I committed to the job, getting the trumpet off wasnt all that bad; I had to install Sure-seals anyway...they have worked great too, so far, but not much use. Do need to be carefully torgueing the trumpet bolts back...I broke one at less than the recommended torque...might be an idea to replace 'em just to be safe.

Good luck,

George

To do a proper job of it you need to remove the trumpet housing and get at the nut on the inside of the diff casing. Sorry. Best yet, replace the nut with a nice new 'Threadlock' type.

James,

Thanks for your reply. Is there a seal / gasket involved or is it just a matter of tightening that nut?

Gary

The gasket between the trumpet housing and the centre case sets the float on the differential bearings and so it has to be 0.010" thick. Unfortunately these are not available if you have the 11 bolt trumpet so you either have to salvage the existing one or make something - but good luck finding 0.010" gasket material. I ended up making it in sections out of brass shim stock and using gasket goop to deal with gaps between pieces. It seems to work, doesn't leak anyway.
