Hi ... my grey ghost has been giving me some grief lately in the gearbox area. After some agressive ploughing in hard ground (trenching for drainage lines) the gears now tend to stick and is very hard to change out of fwd to rev and visa versa. Have I done some clutch/gearbox damage during my ploughing sessions?? The ploughing was difficult due to the droughts we are suffering in Oz at the moment, but at times the plough would just continue to bury in the clay, rather than maintain a constant furrow depth.
Any thoughts would be very helpful.

When you say the gears tend to stick, do you mean they grind when you change gear? If this is so try adjusting the clutch pedal clearance, it should be 3/8" play under the footrest. try not using as much throttle when you do have to change gear and if the plough is pulling into the ground it sounds like the top link needs lengthening to stop it. If its pulling into the ground in clay it will need lengthening, if the top link is set right for normal ground usually in clay it tends to ride out, but if you set it at the right length it will control it ok. If its a different problem to what we think, mail again. Plus if its burying itself the hydraulics may require some attention it should really lift it out when the load on the top link gets too great. OK, I'll jump in here on the basis that if I'm wrong or have missed something someone will tell me!!

If it is difficult to get into reverse from any forwards gear, or vice versa, I would suspect that one or more of your gear selector rods has moved/slipped - possibly as part of high torque in the gearbox. This is not too serious, and you can adjust/reset the selector fork positions by taking the top off the gearbox.

If the gears grind when you are trying to engage a gear, with the clutch down, then your clutch is at fault, not the gearbox, so try adjusting that, too.

I have never yet heard of anyone doing the "Grey ghost" any serious gearbox damage from ploughing - snapped half shafts, yes. Gearboxes, no. Others older and greyer than me may have heard different, but even our tractor drivers couldn't kill our old TED when my parents were farming. Clutches burned, brakes went, but that was about it.

Some on this board use TEs for pulling - no gearbox complaints there either that I have read about.

Don't assume the worst - they are pretty indestructible. HTHTIYOOL :) (Hope this helps to improve your outlook on life)
