The serial number on this F-40 that I'm looking at is SHM-40291. I know that it's a '56 and I know the SHM is supposed to give me more information about it, but I don't know how to decipher it. Is there a Ferguson or MF website where that kind of stuff is explained? Or can someone here give me a quick tutorial on how to figure out what those s/n prefixes mean? Thanks.

Try searching the archives, as someone has posted in the past. "S" denotes utility model. I believe that "H" is high-altitude. "M" means dual-stage clutch.

I followed your advice. I found the info on the MF/MH board archives. Thanks to Paul in AZ for the info.
