F-40....orphan?

I saw a nicely painted F-40 with a loader yesterday. Seller is asking $4900 so I thought I'd do some research. I found the serial number for this model listed on this site under "Ferguson" rather than "Massey-Ferguson" so I assume it was one of the last pre-merger models. I also see that it was only built for 2 years. I typed "F-40" in the archive box...no hits. I tried "MF40"....no hits. Is this really an orphan with no parts support and no one with any interest? Or is it just so rare that no one talks about it?

Seems to be a few around, I was looking for one for awhile and just after I sold a JD 50 and 430T one popped up near me. I bought mine for $3000 and could have got a brush hog for $500 extra but didn't. Mine is in good shape has 4300 hours on it but it doesn't smoke a bit, it may have been overhauled but don't know for sure.

Personally, I think its a tad high. Someone did post some prices from the Ferguson news letter and some of thos tractors are Standard and Hi-Crop. Hi-Crop in this case means 38 inch rear tires not an actual Hi-Crop for cane or anything like that. $3800 or so would be a better price to me.

The Z134 engine is shared by the MF 35, MH-50 and the MF 50. So parts for the engine are available.

Where you located maybe there is something closer to you?

Jim,

I have a MF50 diesel, 1962 and it almost a clone of the F40 - slightly different hood, front grill and of course Perkins diesel. These are very good tractors. I had an uncle who farmed tobacco with a MH50 (the twin of the F-40 of the day). I have been told that that MH50 was warn out when he bought it and after he died, a cousin of mine bought it and STILL farms tobacco with it!

The only part I had trouble getting for my MF50 has been the radiator.

The F40 looks really sharp when painted to their original colors.

BTW, $4900 in my neck of the woods is a little high, however two thing to keep in mind. First is that the F40 has a much more sturdy front axle than the MF35's and check to see if it has a front mounted hydraulic pump to drive the loader. If it does, then you are on the right track with this tractor.

Good luck,
Bill

Jim, I spent my teenage years glued to an F40 or I think the designation of ours was H40. (high crop). I wasn't too happy about it then. But now I'd give one of my capped teeth if I could find a good one. Excellent tractor! Enjoy.

Jim,

The F-40 was completely made after the merger. Merger happened in 1953. F-40 produced '56-'57. From '53 to '58 there was a two line policy at MF. A Ferg. division and a MH division. This was a desastous polity that was finally ended in '58.

The F-40 is recognized as the last and possible the best Ferguson design. There were 9097 F-40's made. After the abolishment of the two line policy the F-40 and MH-50 were retagged the MF-50.

It has the Z129 doesn't it? I think it's the same tractor as the TO35 with bigger wheels and different sheet metal. So parts will be no sweat for the mechanical stuff, if I'm right on this point.

Thanks for the info, Jeff. How does $4900 sound for an F40 with a loader? The tractor is pretty straight with kind of a three-tone paint job: yellow sheetmetal (or is that "buff"?), gray castings, and blue loader. With the blue and yellow appearance, I thought from the road I was seeing a Ford Industrial from early 60's. S/n on this calls out a '56. Grille is missing, but you don't really notice that with all the loader hardware until you get really close. Assuming it runs well and all systems function as they should, is $4900 too high, too low, about right? Thanks!

You will have to adjust prices for your area. For a comparison here are some of the prices from the latest Ferguson Furrows....
'56 F-40 3250 (Illinois)- goos sheet metal and grills.
'56 F-40 $4800
F-40 origional grill screens $200.00 from MN.

New replacement Screens are available for $150 each and $175 for center door.

Thus... The loader adds, Some suggest (up to $1000.00) I guess From this limited data it is in a reasonable ball park. I am sure you could work on the Price a bit. Sounds like it is on the high side of retail in good condition... Lack of screens is a $500 fix.

High altitude config. could be a bonus in your area.

It is just here in Ohio you can get a nice MF165 diesel with a loader at auction for that price. But then again you've got to wait for them to become available.

I hope I don't sound as wishy washy as John Kerry.

Hi Jim. It's been awhile since I've been here, but I just bought a TO35 Diesel this morning and I decided to check the seial number for the date (It's a 1959) and while there, there was a listing for the F-40. See the link.
Me, I'm as happy as, well, a guy with a new tractor. She's a beauty in my eyes. I posted a few days ago regarding it and with the response I got from the good folks on this board,I feel I made a good deal...He took $3000. and with a rebuilt engine in 1997 and new front end last year, she runs real good.

Good to see you're still around. Have a great day!

Chuck

Boy do I feel foolish. I should have read your post more slowly so I would have noticed you've aready traced the S/N for the F-40. Still good to hear from you though.
