I have the original tractor service instruction book for this tractor. The recommended lubricant for the trans/hyd/rearend is as follows:

above 40 F Shell SAE 50 or Essolube 50
below 40 F Shell SAE 40 or Essolube 40

Is this what is commonly being used or is some type of tractor hyd oil being used today? I have tried lighter hyd oils but all the seals leak. Gear oil 80w90 is too thick and does not work well in winter. Any suggestions???

There is plenty of information about this question on here if you look in the archives. As long as it is GL1 like Jim says and not cheap motor oil with detergent in it. if it has detergent in it it carries all the crud round the system and wears the pump and any bearings away eventually. (sooner rather than later)

Here in the States we use gl-1 in the old Fergusons.

There is oil that is for use in combined transmission, hydraulic, and differential applications like this, known as TDH. It's about the right weight. The key as mentioned is to be sure it's GL1, which has no additives harmful to brass parts. GL5 is to be avoided. Jim
