Depends what engine you have, not all engines run at same temperature. The radiator cap needs to be the correct one so the system is pressurised to run at the correct temperature.

160 is a good all around. I have a tractor that works fine on a 160 but put a 180 in it and it goes nuts. Swap em back and no problems. It's a diesel, and I thought I'd be clever and use a hotter stat in the winter..... .wrong!
Weird.

Stats are available from MF dealers, Carquest and NAPA stores. The original stats are 160*. Internal combustion engines must operate within a heat range to run efficiently and economicly. Too little heat and the gas will not vaporize properly and will wash the oil film from the cylinder walls causing rapid wear. Too much heat causes cracked blocks, cyl heads, and burst radiators. etc.
