I just rebuilt my FE-35, 23C desiel engine. It seems to run OK, but I am cocerned it is running hot. I put an aftermarket 180 degree thermostat in it, but it seems to get very hot. I don't have a gage, so I don't know for sure. Is a generic automobile thermostat OK? Is this temp range OK? Anything else I should check?
Thanks,
Chris

A few years ago I put an automotive thermostate in my case 530 desil and it ran hot--- had to dril a small hole in it to let the heat get to it to open it up-- you might need a weep hple to let the heat open the thermostate up... Fran..

I don"t have the actual spec of that thermostat in a 23c engine but I do have it for the 20c engine from which it was derived You need a thermostat with a crack open temp. of 68 - 73 degrees C and a full open temp of 85 degrees C so the one you have in at this time seems near enough and maybe what the other two contributors have said is correct...that you need to clean out your radiator regularly and thoroughly. When you are ploughing through that high brush its sucking all the loose crud into your radiator and blocking it. Just as a matter of interest, please let us know what you find with this.

180F is roughly 82C - so that seems about right to me - anyone else got any feelings on this?

Any 80C +/- stat that fits will be OK - as long as it doesn't allow the rad to boil (= too hot), but the one you have seems to be doing the job.

Having thought about it overnight, just because your stat is 82C does not mean that that is the temp the engine is running at - check your rad for trash clogging the fins, and also try flushing the entire system with a proprietary cooling system flushing agent to remove all the generations of crud - it may help.

However, if the rad is not boiling over, the situation is not yet that bad.

Just some extra thoughts.

Good thought. However you might want to back flush the outside of the radiator first. After bringing the tractor back from a remote bush hogging location I back flushed an apparently clean radiator (garden hose on the back side). For thirty minutes or more silt continued to come out of the front side of the already clean radiator. I was surprised at the amount of junk that was flushed out. It didn't cost anything.

I put new temperature gage in with surprises. Under 190 f. but after a few rows of hard bush hogging in 85 degree heat the temperature went to 200 +. After an hour the temperature was very close to 212. Stopped and while idling cleaned a small amount of silt from the front of the radiator. Temperature fell to 190 while idling. The original gage was probably not working properly for some time since the radiator usually has much more silt than that found. Glad the original gage failed.
