I'm not sure what I bought! I was told that the vintage tractor I purchased is a 1949 Ford Ferguson TO-30, but it is red (not gray) and I thought all Ferguson tractors were painted gray. Help!

Beth,

As Phil has indicated. You have one of a multiple possibilities. Color usually means nothing as people can and do paint these old tractors many colors.

I would respectfully suggest you check these items in this order...

Look for a ID Tag. It will be on the dash near the steering wheel. If the tag is there then look for a serial number. ex: TO23454 or just a number. Does the tag say Ford, or Ferguson, or both.

Next where are the spark plug wire? Going in the top of the engine or the side.

If in the side is there a number on the left side of the engine that starts with a "Z" such as Z-120 or Z-129.

We will help you to id this beast.

Jeff.

Thanks! Upon further investigation I think I have a TO-20. I say this beause I found a serial number TO-28339 and according to a printout I made on TO's, this serial number is a match with the Ferguson TO-20 made in 1950. Now I just need to see a color picture of one to confirm....it's in great running condition and I paid $1350.00 for it (no attachments). Beth

Beth,

ALL TO-20's were battleship grey. Yours has obviously been painted in the past. To confirm for sure look at the left side of the engine and you should see cast into the block the number Z-120. That is the engine make. $1350 in good running order is a better than average price. Ya dun good.

Jeff

Well, you definitely don't have a TO-30 Ford/Ferguson, as there is no such animal. If it really is a 1949 model, and has red cast (underbelly) parts, most likely it is a Ford 8N. If it is a 1949 and is definitely a Ferguson, then it is most likely a TO-20, not a TO-30. For starters, tell us this: do the grill bars go verticle or horizontal? Is there a plate on the dash with a serial number? Do you start it by moving the gear shift, or by depressing a button? Get back and let us know and we'll help.

I think you are right, it is a TO-20. The grill has vertical bars and it starts by moving a gearshift. The serial number is TO-28339 on a plate on the dash, which matches the serial number series for the 1950 T)-20. Now I'm curious to see whether or not the red color is original or not - the fw decals that remain on the tractor are on top of, not under the red paint.
