I just bought a H. feguson tractor serial # to-54644. I think it is a to-20 or a 30, but I'm to stupid to know. Anyway, I would like to change the oil and don't know what type and weight to add. I am also almost out of gas and don't know if I can add just normal pump gas, or if I need to add some type of additive to it. Obviously, I don't have a clue on what I am doing; however, I don't want to do anything bad to my new tractor.

Lets just assume that I am a complete idiot, can someone tell me the very basics on what to do to this lovely piece of history. ( type and quantity of engine oil, hydraulic oil, transmission oil etc) I know I need a good beginers manual on this thing and I am still searching on where to get one.

I can't keep my pants on and wait to find a manual since I really want to at least get new fresh fluids in her so I can drive it up and down the street, showing it off to my neighbors!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated and sorry for being so stupid. I really just want to do the right thing, even if I end up looking a little dopey with these questions.

Now that I have a second to breath, I see if I can answer at leat a few of your questions.

As for Gas use straight 87 octain unleaded gas. No need to add any thing to it. If you are not using the tractor much.. i.e. enought to go through 10 gallons of gas in a few weeks add a fuel stabilizer such as sta-bil to the gas to prevent varnish. While the tank is nearly empty take a good look inside with a flash light. Look for floaties, rust particles etc. If bad you may want to consider treating the tank prior to filling. If not bad then you know and can go ahead and fill.

Check the oil level, the crank case takes 30 wt engine oil. the oil filter is in the oil pan and takes a number 1103 from NAPA.

Hope this helps
Jeff

first of all you sound like you want to do too much all at once ,like the rest of us you will learn patience ,you will learn to tackle a job after you have asked all the questions ,got your parts on hand before you take things apart ,and have a plan in yor head ,the one thing to remember is you are never alone in whatever you are doing ,somebody has already solved the problem you are trying to solve and they are willing to share that knowledge with you.these tractors respond to everything you do to them and one day soon you will stand back take a look and you will be proud of what you accomplished good luck Danny
PS i just got back from a trip to Scottsdale ,didnt see any Fergusons in the area though

See thread above yours for fluid discussion.

If you have water in the rear fluid so a search I gave a cleaning procedure in the last 2 weeks.

Also do a search on cheep manuals. The owners manual and shop service manual can be had fo under $30 for both where most places sell them for $30 or more each.

Glad you straightened that out Paul. First you said the guy was smart for buying a Fergie and then you referred to us as enthusiASSes. Was this some type of Freudian slip? LOL Paul F B

You don't sound stupid, just impatient! Take your time, get a good set of factory manuals (shop, parts, & owner's), and then read 'em; especially the owners manual. Do this for safety's sake. You can hurt yourself on a tractor;these older ones especially. The parts folks on this forum sell them and, if you do an archive search, you'll find out some more outlets for manuals.
Look up your serial number on the forum to your left entitled "Serial Numbers" and read them. You can use pump gas (unleaded regular). 10W30 or SAE 30 detergent oils are my recommendation for the engine but you'll hear some different opinions from other folks in these forums. The transmission/rear axle/hydraulic system use the same oil and it goes in the same filler hole. Do an archive search and read the 10^6 opinions on that topic. Unless the trans/hydraulic oil is filthy or full of water, don't be in too much of a hurry to change the five gallons that's all ready in there.

First of all, please stop referring to yourself as being "stupid" or an "idiot." You are neither. Anyone who buys a Ferguson tractor has some smarts. Now that we"ve established your normal mental capacities, let"s get to some answers.

Yes, get owner, shop, and parts manuals immediately. Check on the left side of this web site page for manuals to purchase. You have a 1951 TO-20. You can start out with 30 or 10W=30 oil. The transmission, hydraulics, and the differential fluid are all from the same reservoig and require GL-1 gear lube. Refill from the opening on the transmission cover. There are two drains to open when you drain the hydraulic fluid. You can burn regular gas unless you intend to work the tractor many hours a day under load conditions.

You"ll find lots of good information on this site. Learn to use the "search" on this site to find answers to questions that you can"t get answers from your manuals. There are other good web sites also. I would recommend the one below.

Good luck, friend, and welcome to the fraternity of Ferguson owners.

Paul Nelson
