Just bought a TO20. Owner said it was still a 6 volt system but has a 12 volt battery to start. I am going to guess that this is not a good idea. Anybody have some advice on this?

My guess is that the charging system is screwed up. Can't charge a 12 v battery with a 6 v generator!(It does have a generator and not an alternator doesn't it?) In the old days when the cell connectors were external, I've seen some folks use a 12 volt by tapping into three of the six cells to run a 6 v system. If your going to run it with the 12 v battery, I would advise you to check the charging system and make sure that you have a resistor in the feed to the coil because your likely to burn the 6 v coil up as well as the points.
You need to consider whether you want to go to a 12 volt system, or go back to the original 6 v system. If you do the latter, you'll need to get a 6 v battery and make sure that the charging system is working properly.

Yes there is a generator and regulator on the tractor. However the coil looks brand new and is marked that it is 12 volt also. If I put on an alternator in place of the generator will that complete the conversion? What about the lights? How do I convert them to 12v? They are currently not connected. Also the battery was hook up for negative ground. What a mixed up mess!

Since the coil is a 12 volt, it should be OK. You have to decide whether you want to keep the original 6 volt system or go all the way to a 12 v. If you go with a 12 volt get a one wire alternator with the built in regulator. You'll need to go negative ground on the system. That means your light bulbs need to be 12 volt also. Your starter is OK. Running it with 12 volts is actually easier on it because the starting current is halved.

PS Brent I forgot to mention you Soulld use a Negative ground, old fords and Fergies and others used a positive ground, you need to use a negative ground for the alt system.

I fully restored aTO20 It depends what you want to do with the tractor. IF you want to keep it orig. go back to 6v. If not keep the 12v coil, get
a one wire alternator from auto parts store etc.
Buy new bulbs . Keep the lift and start system of the transmission system for safety reasons and I would suggest rewiring the whole tractor ,one wire at a time as needed. The one wire alt. has a built in regulator. The 6v starter will work fine if it is in good shape. You can get wire diagrams from. Link
