I have a broke starter on my 1951 TO 20. It has been converted to 12 Volt system. The broken starter is 6 volt starter and will spin but won't engage the ring gear. Two Questions:
Is there are a 12 volt replacement starter from maybe a later massey ferguson 12 volt version that will fit the TO 20? The tractor store says they can get the 1955 to 1965 MF starter that is 12 V but is not sure if it will fit. What other alternative do I have on this replacement and what are the possible problems and consequences? Thanks

Make sure that the ring gear is still on the flywheel! The original design of the flywheel required that the the ring gear was sweated on the flywheel from the rear. Every time you start up, the starter engagement wacks the flywheel a little and can eventually drive the ring gear off the flywheel. Some people tried to fix it by welding the ring gear back onto the flywheel. Whoever owned my TO-30 did this. It however came off when I first got it.(You gota' know what your doing to weld on white cast iron.) The symptom wasthat when I tried to start the starter just whined but nothing on the engine moved.Ferguson made a design change that added a machined lip to the back of the flywheel and the ring gear was installed from the front of the flywheel. It's virtually impossible to have the starter knock of the ring gear with the new design. I found a used flywheel with the new design and replace mine with it. So check and make sure that your problem is not a knocked off ring gear before you do anything to the starter. You'll have to remove the starter and look inside at the ring gear. Hope this helps.

I agree with Paul, sounds like you just need a new bendix. That bendix can go bad no matter what voltage combo you are running. I had to install one about a year ago on my 6 volt system. Replacing the bendix is pretty easy and you don't need any special tools. You can save a bunch of money if you do it yourself.

Sounds like the bendix has gone bad. The 6 volt starter can handle 12 volt for many years. my to-20 has used 12 volt for 25 years. You can have the starter rebuilt to 12 volt rating. Replace ypur bendix and you should be in good shape.

Also make sure your tractor is properly timed. 12 volt wont hurt your starter any. I converted a TO-30 and 2 other tractors to 12 volt. No starter problems.
