Hi All,
I know that this question has been asked here before but I wasn't quite sure about the responses. I am wondering what color of grey that the F-40 was originally painted. Some here say that it is Metalic Flint Grey. My tractor had been painted the MF red and grey but the grey appeared to be the original color and had primer underneath which made me believe that it was original. The red had the original creme color underneath. But the grey is definately not Flint Metalic grey. None of the pictures of original tractors is clear enough to discern the exact color. My question is does anyone know for sure the original color of grey?
Thanks in Advance

I have a current AGCO/MF paint chip chart. The original paint on the castings of the F-40 was M-1025. That same color is on the paint chart that I have. It is still available from MF dealers.

The flint gray metallic was first used by MF in 1956, even on the later 1956 TO-35's. That samme metallic flint gray was used for the F-40, and the red and gray TO-35's.

Recently I found a tractor part with the flint gray metallic color (never been used and always out of the sun). I compared the color to the paint chip M-1025 on the MF chip chart and it was an excellent match.

The bottom line is that the castings of the F-40 can be painted with the current MF 1025 flint gray metallic color and it will look like the original.

I hope this is helpful, not confusing.

Paul

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the information. I guess my tractor had just had been taken down to the bare metal before painting the older Ferguson grey. The Flint Metalic Grey goes much beter with the Biege from the tractors I have seen restored. The F-40 just seemed like an early model to get the The Flint Metalic Grey. But then again they were ahead of there time in a lot of respects. Especially compared to the fords.
Thanks again for clearing things up.

Darrell, I was keenly interested in the same subject since I am presently restoring two F-40's and wanted to make sure I got the correct paint colors. So I did a great deal of research on this topic.

Interestingly enough, the original plans by MHF were to paint the F-40 the same color as the 1955 TO-35 (light Ferguson gray with metallic green castings). That was changed before production started. Even so, a few early prototypes and demo models were painted beige and metallic green. These were sold and today you can still find a few beige and green F-40's as well as a few beige and green TO-35's.
