I have both, 48 8n and a 51 TO30. I use the Fergie for my business and I prefer it. It has been very dependable and a real work horse. My two cents.

The lack of either live hydraulic or pto made it very frustrating to mow (JD #9) or bale with. Rake hay or chase wagons it was ok. Ford hundred series would be light years ahead. Just depends what you would be using it for.

Hi Paul, I have owned the 1947 8N and the 1952 8N and they are good tractors, 47 has front distributor behind the radiator,52 is side mount. You can buy a kit to move it to the side on the 47. They are flat heads and the valves on the 47 are not ajustable. The gears are higher than the TO's. I have owned a TO20 for 30 years and owned a TO30 for 20 some. I really can't say enough about the TO's. The TO20 engine is a continental 120 and the TO30 is a 129, though I just rebuilt the 20 for the first time and put the larger bore kit so its a 129 now too. Overhead valves, side mount distributor, a better steering box, are some of the advantages. I owned the 8N's for years too,I used them all in the bussiness, You really can't go wrong with either. Happy tractoring, Sivert

Do you have a source for the kit to convert frontmount to sidemount on an 8N? I'd be curious to see what the kit consists of. I've heard of people doing the conversion using a sidemount donor block for parts, but it sounded like it was way more trouble than its worth. On the front mount you just remove two bolts and pull the whole distributor out and work on it on the workbench, plus you don't have much you can really mess up on it.

No,I don't have a source because I have never done the converson, But I was told you could. I should have been more clear on that. I guess I didn't because I felt the same as you at the time.
If I would of had trouble, I would of. It was a bit of a pain to change the points. Though today you might be able get the electronic ignition for it as I did on my TO20. Sorry I wasn't more help Scott.

Echo Jerry. A '47' 8n has front dist. A bear to work on.

There is not much difference, in my opinion. The Ferguson has a little more horsepower and the 8N has position control. Depending on the distributor configuration of the 8N, the TO-30 maybe a easier to work on for a tune up. That's my opinion, for whatever it's worth.

In addition to what Jerry said, the overhead valve Ferguson engine has more torque than the flathead Ford engines.

Paul;

Mabe you should consider moving up to a Ford or Ferguson or Massey Ferguson with live pto and hydraulics. I supposwe it depends on what you will be using it for.

I grew up with Fergusons,Fords and Farmalls but no 8N's.

steve
