I have taken of from my TO 35 the Marvel-Schebler carb to clean, and have ordered the basic rebuild kit. I used spray carb cleaner & brake cleaner to clean up the carb, is that good enough or should it be soaked in a carb cleaner? Also is there anything special that should be done to the porous plug. I thought that when I took the carb apart I would find the float full of gas, because of starting problems & twice I have taken the breather tube off the carb to have gas pour out??
Manuals don't mention much about carb cleaning so hope I do it correct. Thanks

I have seen more than a few posts about some gas backing-up into the air intake. The general message I got was to turn-off the gas valve under the tank if your tractor is going to sit more than a couple days because the float doesn't do a super job of 100% shutoff for long periods of time. I just rebuilt my carb a couple months ago. Used lots of carb. cleaner, let it soak overnight - mainly to make it easier for me to scrub down the outside parts, pulled out all the little jets, screws, etc., scrubbed it down, ran pipe cleaners thru all the little passages, and blew air thru everything when I was done. Don't know anything about a porous plug.
The basic rebuild kit I bought had no choke parts what-so-ever. I wanted those parts more than anything else because my choke had "issues". The kit also did not have all the little screws, jets, etc. I also found the rebuild kit float adjustment guidelines were different than my service manual. The kit instructions looked to be generic guidelines for several carb. models to me. I used the manual guidelines. I have seen some "complete" rebuild kits, I don't know the diference , except that it costs more.

terry,
ive done a few of these on my to30 and a te20 and i do it as folloes .I buy a gallon of Tyme-1 carb cleaner from Napa ,i take the carbs apart carefully as you might be reusing some of the parts ,some of the kits dont have the correct parts some times so hold on to the stuff you are taking out .I seperate the main body by removing the 4 screws i take out the trottle plate and choke plate and clean these seperately i pull as much off as i can and then put the main body in two parts in the solution over nite or longer if it is really bad ,after i take it out of the solution i air dry it and start rebuilding with the new kit i have learned the hard way that if any old jet dont want to come out LEAVE it there and move on,put in the new parts and put the two halves together put in the main needle valve last and dont force any thing, new gaskets are a must no matter what the old ones look like ,again im speaking from experience then just adjust the main adjusting valve to whatever your book says hook up your trottle and choke rods and snug it up ,dont over tighten you can snug up the two nuts at the manifold after you run for awhile ,I have used the same gallon of cleaner to do 4 carbs and i just get rid of a cupfull each time along with the debris ,anyway thats how i do it and its been successfull for me ,please excuse the typing ,that i dont know how to do yet
good luck Danny
