i just had a TO 20 delivered...i had not seen it in person...was reputed to have a good motor and a good tranny etc...i cant get the tranny to go into reverse...and there is a knock that i am trying to trace down in the motor...louder when revved up...havent been able to tell yet if it is a rod or main (pouring rain out right now and shed is full)..other than that and the bailing wire holding the exhaust on...is as described in ebay text...

I wonder if i am doing something wrong in finding reverse? cant get it to go in so far no matter what i try..also...if i end up putting in mains...will i have to split the tractor to do it?

Thanks for the responses ahead of time...

Glenn, lifters and rocker arms will tick.Rods and mains will knock, don`t run your motor until you check it out. You don`t have to seperate the tractor to see the bearings. The last thing you want to do is spin a bearing.I would guess its a rod since they get the most thrust. RT

The knock is a loud deep knock (sounds like rear of engine), not like lifters and not a 'rattle' like rods...the seller did say in the ebay ad that it had a slight rear main seal leak...the oil, that looks to me to be mineral oil, definately NOT motor oil, could have been used to cover this sound until sold or to slow down the rear main leak (thicker viscosity)

By the way, this seller had a very high feedback rating selling tractors or i never would have bought site unseen...looks like i screwed up and it is going to cost me...my mistake

i will call him monday, but no way to take tractor back and lose even more money in the hauling etc. I will definately leave a poor feedback for him, hoping to keep others from making the same mistake...

Just wanted to let everyone know to be careful, no matter WHAT the feedback says...

You know my 20 will not go into reverse sometimes. I have to put in another gear or two before it will go in. May help you.

badgerwy has it right. Lift up a little, move it right and pull back. Also, multiple coats of paint and rust can make the "S" position look like "R"

hi glen try lifting up on the shifter as u slide it to the right .the tractor had a lock to keep it from going in to reverse by accident.so try taking it as far to the right as u can than lift up on shifter see if it will go over to the right enough to find reverse..luck to ya

I am not sure about the TO 20, but the to 35 have always had a problem geting into reverse. Has to do with having the rails lined up and having no pressure on the trans when shifting. I simply open the hydro fill hole and jigle the trans rail alittle to free it up. As for you oil, its always a good idea to drain and change all fluids when you purchase a used tractor.

As for the knocking, you may want to check the tappets and adjust them.
