My tractor was converted partly to a 12v system. The batt is 12 and the lights, but the coil is still 6v, aleast thats what is labled on the coil,,is this possible and if it is should it be converted the rest of the way? Are there any advantages of a 6v coil/cap to a 12v one. Also when i use my tractor it seems that i have to have the throttle open all the way to operate up small grades, and using the back plow, is this normal, how can one acheive more horse power, is this related to the coil volt system? I am a new tractor owner, any imput on these matter would be greatly appreciated, thank you,,,,, , ken

Most 12V conversions utilize a ballast resistor in series with the original 6 volt coil. This will give you about 4.5 V at the coil and keep the 12 v system from burning out the coil. A 12 volt coil costs more than the 6 volt coil with the external ballast resistor because the 12 volt coil contains a resistor within the coil. Assuming that all the components are OK, there is nothing in this set up to cause you a problem. My TO-30 is set up this way.
With regard to your lack of power, that could be caused by a lot of things. If you test the spark is it nice and blue? If it's not, are the points set corerectly? Are the points corroded? Is your distributor wore out? Is your timing set correctly? Is your carburetor adjusted properly? Is your air cleaner clogged?

If you don't have a set of manuals, get 'em. Get the factory reproduction manuals if you can. The IT series are OK but the factory manuals are better in my opinion. Then come back to this forum if you need help. Hope this helps.

12 volt, 6 volt the HP of the tractor will be the same. Now if you still have a 6 volt coil there should be a 2-OHM ballast resister in series from the ignition switch. That could be your power lost. With a 12 volt coil you don't need the resister.

Will use the same distributor. One thing on the 6 volt coil with 12 volt battery make sure the + is from the switch and - to the distributor. On the 6 volt positive ground it's the other way around.
